Caregiving Information Index

Caring for an individual with Down's is something that you have been doing all their lives. You watched them blossom under your watchful eye, learning new skills like walking, feeding themselves, dressing. The list of milestones goes on and on. Then you begin to notice changes in behavior as they become older adults. You hear the words "dementia" or even "Alzheimer's", but what does that really mean?

Nearly all Down's adults have the potential of developing symptoms of Alzheimer's Disease. It was never prevalant in the past because most Down's did not survive past the teenage years. Through the help of modern medicine, more and more Down's are now living into their 40's, 50's and even some into their 60's.

"So?", you say. "I am already a caregiver. What can be different?" A lot, unfortunately. All of the tasks that your loved one has gained throughout their lifetime may eventually be lost. They may once again become like that of an infant, needing complete care from feeding to diapering. It is not an easy path to follow. Your loved one could become violent, even if no such behavior has been exhibited in the past. Seizures are also likely to develop.
