The paper is less than two full pages or more than eight pages.

Characters:
§ This story lacks a main character, because it jumps around from one character to another. 
§ It lacks any real characters. 
§ Characters are unoriginal: spin-offs from TV, movie, other books, etc. 

Time-Setting: 
This story cannot give enough detail with the length of time the writer tries to cover in the story.  The time covered in this story would be more appropriate for a novel or longer story.   


Structure:
This story does not have a clear plot structure showing a beginning, middle, and end.

Style:
This story uses a poor opening line

This story does not use direct quotes

D

The paper is at least two full pages and at most eight pages.

Characters:
This story has a main character, but…
§ The main character's role is very weak; he or she may actually disappear from the action. 
§ The main character is not well-described. 

Time-Setting: 
The time covered  by this story is a couple of hours (excluding brief flashbacks, memories, etc.)


Structure:
There is some attempt to create a plot structure with a beginning, middle, and end, but some parts may not connect well.

Style:
While this story avoids the worst opening lines, the opening that is settles for is only adequate or average.   

If this story has more than one character, this story uses dialogue with direct quotes, not just reported speech. However:
§ there is very little dialogue
§ dialogue is incorrectly or inappropriately done.

This story has a main character , and he or she is believable and well-described. 
There are too many supporting characters or supporting characters don't have distinct personalities; they are just names.

The time covered  by this story is a couple of hours (excluding brief flashbacks, memories, etc.)

Structure:
This story CLEARLY follows a structured plot with a beginning, a middle, and an end.  However, the story needs more detail or the writer needs to delete some material. 

Style:
This story uses an engaging opening line


If this story with more than one character, this story uses dialogue with direct quotes, not just reported speech. 
This story just gives the information, but doesn't let the reader "see" the scene or action by describing it. 

B/A

The paper is at least two full pages and at most eight pages.

Characters:
This story has a main character , and he or she is believable and well-described. 
Supporting characters have at least one distinct characteristic.  They appear to the reader to be more than just names.  Supporting characters are of a manageable number. 

Time-Setting: 
The time covered  by this story is a couple of hours (excluding brief flashbacks, memories, etc.)

Structure:
This story CLEARLY follows a structured plot with a beginning, a middle, and an end. 

This story is structured with scenes.  Scenes are adequately described and have clear beginnings and endings.   


The writer of this story has made good decisions about what to include and what to exclude. 


Style:
This story uses an engaging opening line


This story uses dialogue with direct quotes, not just reported speech. 


This writing show some use of "show don't tell" (for a B) .


This writing shows mastery or near-mastery of "show don't tell" (for an A). 


This writing shows voice (for an A).
