Part 1 - Hope

Chapter Seven

Rebecca was in the kitchen setting the table. She had put a roast in the crock pot before leaving for work in the morning and was just finishing up the potatoes and vegetables and calling the boys in from outside to get cleaned up for supper. She heard a vehicle drive in. Through the screen she saw Scott pulling up in front of the house. A smile emerged across her face and her heart as she dried her hands on a towel and stepped out the back door to greet him.

Ethan and Kyle were already at the car. They liked this guy. He was funny and seemed to like them and anyone who you could get to buy you pizza was worth taking notice of. He had just handed them each his prized gift contracting the reaction that he had hoped for. Two young boys were running all over the yard and screaming with delight, staging mock sword fights as their lighted sabers hummed and flashed their way through the early evening.

Scott was very much pleased. It showed in his wide smile as he turned to Rebecca and then flashing a sheepish grin he apologized, "Well, it seemed like a good idea at the time."

She stood there shaking her head and laughing. He had indeed won their appreciation.

"I have something for you too," he said as he stuck his head back in the car coming out with a small gift wrapped parcel. She looked up at him. He gave her a half grin. As she opened it she was taken aback. She was not used to receiving gifts like this, ever. She loved the perfume. It was never anything that she could buy for herself. A luxury that she was not accustomed to.

"I can’t accept this." She hardly knew the words had escaped from her lips.

"Of course you can. I hoped you would like it."

"And it’s the real thing! It won’t wear off. I only get the fake stuff." She took off the cap and dabbed some on her wrists. "Yep, this is real!"

Scott was pleased again.

They stood outside and talked a bit while the boys continued to fly passed them and around the car shouting what they remembered as dialog from the movies. Finally Rebecca motioned that they go inside and enter a safer zone. The smell of the roast filled the small kitchen as they walked in. She knew that look. She set another place.

Finally managing to get the boys settled down they ate and afterwards he and Rebecca continued to sit at the table and talk. He wanted to know what she had been doing the last few days. He told her about his trip to L.A. and explained a little about how all the promotional ends come together. That was the first time that she learned about his upcoming tour. He told her how he had seen the swords and just knew that he had to get them for the boys.

He had an idea. "You know, I was thinking that maybe the boys would like to come over and go swimming sometime."

Rebecca turned an eye toward the living room where the boys were. "What do you think?" she looked back at him raising an eyebrow.

Scott called out to them and they flew into the kitchen, swords still lit and buzzing. The offer was met with great enthusiasm and they were ready to go right then. The details were worked out and the next Sunday afternoon was chosen.

"If you’re good," Scott added and they flew out of the room again.

About eight-thirty in the evening Rebecca finally was able to coerce two boys into a bath. From the living room she could hear what was going on in the bathroom. Scott tried to talk but eyed her every so often curious as to whether or not she thought that she should be going in there.

She finally did get up and got them into their bedroom. During that time they called Scott in to show him things and generally slow down the process of bedtime.

Rebecca was trying to get Kyle out of a towel and into some underwear. A moment of modesty came over the boy as he didn’t want Scott to see him naked. Rebecca finished drying him and assured, "I am sure that Scott has seen a penis before."

She knew right away, and maybe even before she said it, that was not the thing to do. Kyle took and flew with it.

"She said pee-nis!" he snickered. Rebecca rolled her eyes and after about another five or six repeats of the word finally told him that she had heard enough.

She finally got the boys into bed with a few stern instructions not to get out and to keep quiet. Shutting off the light but leaving the door open a crack she and Scott went back to the living room.

She offered him a glass of wine and a slice of apple pie that he had declined earlier and was now ready for. They sat on the sofa and only on a few occasions did she have to yell over her shoulder in the direction of the bedroom.

The room had gotten darker and Rebecca turned on one light behind her. It was a time that she enjoyed very much, alone with Scott in her own home, sipping wine and just talking.

That day to work she had worn a peach colored skirt that fell just above her knees and a light weight white knit top with a rounded neckline. As she kicked off her low heels to curl her legs up under her she realized that she had never been as dressed up around Scott as she was at that moment.

Her hair was turned slightly under at the ends and fell gently against her neck. The scent of the perfume drifted about the room and she would occasionally lift her wrist to inhale the sweet aroma. She felt very pretty as the glow from the lamp cast warm shadows about the cozy room.

They faced each other as they talked. Scott was more keenly attired than she was normally used to seeing him also. A blue chambray shirt with a button-downed collar was tucked neatly into the waistband of a pair of perfectly fitting black jeans. The sleeves were rolled to the elbows to reveal forearms strong but softened with a dusting of pale blond hair. The familiar tennis shoes that he wore around his place were replaced with a black suede style that laced.

That night as they sat Rebecca caught herself really looking at him, those bright blue eyes, his hands and fingers as he lifted the glass to his lips, his soft blond hair that fell about his neck, those deep dimples when he smiled. Sinking into the soft comfort of her sofa she had a feeling of closeness that she had not felt before sweep over her. She sensed that he felt it too.

It was going on ten-thirty p.m. and he knew that she had to be getting up early in the morning. He should leave. Rebecca followed him out to his car. They stood in the warm night air and moonlight. Neither one wanted to say good-night. Something was happening to them. They both felt it.

Reaching down he gently took her hand in his, lifting her wrist near his cheek. He softly inhaled the scent. "Its still there."

Rebecca smiled and felt her heart quiver as he took another few seconds to caress her hand in his. His palm was so warm and just the gentle touch of his cheek as he brushed it with her wrist sent a tantalizing sensation through her whole body. He lightly moved his thumb over the palm of her hand and she felt her pulse quicken. She wondered if he could feel the rush of blood through her wrist that he held so tenderly.

When at last he let loose her hand she was looking up into his eyes in the evening moonlight. Again he mentioned that he should be going. However slowly, he got in his car and she stood in the yard as he drove around and up the road looking back to see if she was still there.

Rebecca was at work the next day fretting to herself. She was going to Scott’s the next Sunday. It was already Thursday! She had to buy a new bathing suit! She wasn’t about to go there in that ratty looking thing that she had. She had to get a tan! Not that she wasn’t tan but she remembered Linda.

Who would be there? Was he having several people over and included them? She was nervous about that. Would they be alone? She found herself being more comfortable with that. She had three days in which to go shopping and work on her body. She was very anxious.
