"Mrs. D. was a woman of much native energy, blended with great mildness and gentleness of character. Her piety was of a cheerful cast, lightening every burden of life, sustaining the heart under trial, sanctifying affliction and rendering the future ever bright and joyous through the power of divine faith and love. * * * It was in the private circle of home that her virtues shone most brightly. With a strong faith in the promises of God to parental faithfulness, she labored diligently and prayerfully to inspire her children with honorable and right impulses, and to train them up for usefulness and for heaven. * * * After weeks of painful suffering, which she bore with Christian resignation, she sank to rest, Oct. 9, 1839." 264. SETH WILLISTON7 (Nathaniel,6 Nathaniel,5 Nathaniel,4 John,3 John,2 Thomas1), b. Nov. 16, 1803; m. Nov. 7, 1822, Fanny Roe, dau. William, son of Nathaniel4 (10) Benedict, b. Dec. 30, 1798, and d. Jan. 8, 1854; m. 2d, June 19, 1856, Mrs. Anna Elizabeth Farnsworth, dau. James and Nancy Russell, formerly of Boston. He was a native of Norwalk, Ct., and early distinguished for his intelligent energy in business. Being an apprentice to the printing business in the office of the Norwalk Gazette, at the age of nineteen he bought his time and became the proprietor, editor and publisher of the paper, which he continued until Jan., 1833, when he removed to New York and became the proprietor and publisher of the New York Evangelist, in connection with Rev. Joshua Leavitt. He disposed of the Evangelist in 1837, and soon after became the publisher of the Emancipator and other publications of the American and the American and Foreign Anti-Slavery Society, while at the same time carrying on his printing and publishing business. In 1848 he projected the publication of a new Evangelical religious newspaper, to be devoted to the interest and cause of congregationalism. This plan was subsequently modified, and in Dec. of that year he commenced the publication of the Independent, under the auspices of Rev. Drs. Bacon, Thompson and Storrs, as editors, Dr. Leavitt, as assistant, and Messrs S. B. Hunt, S. B. Chittenden, Bowen and McNamee, as proprietors. In Dec., 1853, he relinquished his connection with the paper, and continued his printing and publishing business until March, 1854, when his office was totally destroyed by fire. Latterly, he has conducted an extensive real estate agency. Mr. B. was for some years clerk of the Congregational church at Norwalk. On his removal to N. Y., he joined what is now Thirteenth street Presbyterian church, of which he became a trustee and an elder. Leaving this church, to aid in the organization of the Broadway Tabernacle church, he became a trustee and Deacon, and so remained till it was changed into a Presbyterian church. He died Nov. 10, 1869. His funeral sermon was preached by Dr. J. P. Thompson, from the text "diligent in business, fervent in spirit, serving the Lord." (See Hall's Hist. Norwalk, Ct., p. 319.)

Henry B, p 124.jpg (39376 bytes)125. Rev. HENRY6 (John,5 Nathaniel,4 John,3 John,2 Thomas1), b. Jan. 22, 1796, Norwalk, Ct.; m. Sept. 1, 1823, Mary Betts, dau. Capt. Stephen Lockwood. "His early years were spent at Norwalk. After preparatory study at Phillips Academy, Andover, Mass., he entered Yale College, and pursuing the usual course, graduated in 1822. The year following he taught school in Virginia. Although for some years in feeble health, he determined to devote himself to the ministry, and pursued a theological course under private instruction. He commenced the work of the ministry at Waterbury, Ct., in 1826. The following year he preached in Galway, where he received a cordial request from the Congregational church in Norwalk, Ct., to become their pastor. Accepting the invitation, he was installed Aug. 12, 1828, and continued there four years, amid scenes of great religious interest and fruitfulness. Impaired health compelled him to resign his charge and visit the south. On his return, he labored a short time in the church at Somers, in 1833. In October of that year he accepted a call from Lansingburgh, where he remained two years. After which, declining permanent engagements, he preached (1836-7) at Covington, Ky., where he founded a church; afterwards (1838) at Stillwater, then at the Broadway Tabernacle, N. Y.; also, at the Bowery church (1839). Leaving New York, he accepted a call from the Congregational church, Westport, Ct. (1840), and remained there twelve years. Resigning this charge, he spent about a year in Europe (1852), and on his return was settled over the Presbyterian church at Portchester, where he continued until 1863, when advancing years induced him to lay aside his duties as pastor. He continued to reside at Portchester, ministering occasionally there, and in neighboring churches, until his decease, which occurred at Saratoga Springs, July 18, 1868. The foregoing is a brief record of a useful life, held in grateful remembrance in many households where the fragrance of his loving words and deeds still lingers." A funeral discourse was preached in the Presbyterian church, Norwalk, Ct., by B. F. Munday, the pastor, from I John, iii, 2. (See Norwalk Gazette, July 28, 1868, for account of his last illness and funeral services).

Notes for URIAH BENEDICT:

"Henry Marvin Benedict, The Genealogy of the Benedicts in America,  (Joel Munsell, 82 State Street, Albany, NY, 1870), pages 170-171."

188. URIAH6 (Uriah,5 Thomas,4 Thomas,3 John,2 Thomas1), b. Oct. 1, 1765, Norwalk, Ct.; m. 1783, Ruth, dau. Joseph and Sarah (Mead) Rockwell(*) of Ballston, b. Nov. 29, 1763, in Connecticut, and d. Feb. 18, 1801, at Milton. He m. 2d, Feb., 1802, Phoebe, dau. of Benjamin and Phoebe (Rowland) Marvin,(+) b. May 18, 1779, at Lyme, Ct., and d. Sept. 27, 1825, at Albany. The father of Uriah, and his fellow settlers of Connecticut birth, had left their quiet homes and plunged into the wilderness north of Albany. While they were necessarily exposed to all the privations and perils incident to a frontier life in Revolutionary times, the peculiar situation of their settlement was fraught with additional dangers. It was on a natural route to Canada, which inevitably would become a thoroughfare for hostile expeditions from that quarter. This section was, previous to the war, the abiding place of many malignant and enterprising tories, and the fears of loyal men, that these renegades would become the guides of marauding Indians, were more than realized. In 1779, in consequence of an official warning, all loyalists abandoned their homes and repaired to Schenectady. Uriah Benedict's family was among the refugees. An attack was made by Major Monroe and his savages. The inhabitants rallied and pursued the marauders, until met by a captive who had been released, and was charged with a message from Col. Gordon, one of their prisoners, asking that they might not be pursued, because Major Monroe had ordered his men, if attacked, to kill all the prisoners. It is said, that on its becoming known in Montreal that Monroe had given so brutal an order, he was cashiered. Uriah Jr., then in his fourteenth year, probably, was engaged in this pursuit, for his name appears on the pay-roll of that period. He saw service again, in the fall of 1781. He went on foot through the woods to Waterford, a distance of some fourteen miles, and enlisted among the three months men, for the defense of the frontier, then menaced by St. Leger's expedition. Soon after, his father heard that he was seen pursued by an Indian, and was probably killed. After a troublesome journey of seventy miles which Uriah Sr. had made to bring home the body of his son, he found him celebrating some great success of the American arms, probably the surrender of Cornwallis. It seems the son had gained a tree, and consequently an advantage which enabled him to kill his pursuer. After the close of the war he settled down to quiet and domestic pursuits. His great natural capabilities for business brought ample rewards for his diligence and enterprise; the Four Corners in Milton, where he established himself, becoming a nucleus, around which population and industry soon gathered and continued to increase. The hospitalities of his house were liberal to a degree not easily imagined now; and, his charity to the poor was even more generous than his entertainment of the stranger. He was a gentle and amiable man, with tastes befitting rural life. A tender husband and father, he was not less useful and exemplary as a citizen. Leaving Milton in 1805, he, in partnership with Uriah Marvin, conducted a business, in Albany, in West India goods and the produce of the country. Mr. B. continued in business until his death of a prevailing epidemic, May 10, 1813.

Joel T B, p 140.jpg (45573 bytes)150. Rev. JOEL TYLER,6 A. M. (Rev. Abner,5 Peter,4 James,3 John,2 Thomas1), b. Sept. 6, 1772, at Middletown, Ct.; m. Jan. 1, 1795, Currance, dau. Deacon Adin Wheeler of Southbury, Ct., b. July 6, 1772. "He studied law with Thaddeus Benedict, Esq., of Reading, Ct., and was admitted to the bar of Fairfield Co., in 1794. He continued in the practice of law six years, first in Stamford, and then in Branford; and during this period, 1796-1801, was Chaplain 25th Regt., 5th Brig., 3d Div. of the Ct. Militia. His views changing, after preparatory theological studies with his father, he entered the ministry as a Presbyterian clergyman. He preached his first sermon Jan. 15, 1802. His first congregation was that of Blooming Grove, Orange Co., where he was ordained as an Evangelist, Nov. 16, 1803. From that place he was called to an adjoining agricultural parish (Bethlehem), in the township of New Windsor, where he remained four years. He was next settled over the church and congregation in Franklin, Del. Co., where he remained about eight years, when he was called to New Concord (Chatham), Columbia Co., and was pastor of the Presbyterian church there till, having been repeatedly attacked with bleeding at the lungs, he was forced to abandon the continued active duties of his profession, and was employed by the Pennsylvania branch of the American Tract Society in Philadelphia, where he remained till his death, occasioned by the bursting of a blood-vessel, October 21, 1833. He was buried in Laurel Hill cemetery, Philadelphia, Pa. Eager, in his History of Orange Co., says of him: 'Mr. Benedict was a man of ardent piety, untiring zeal and eloquence, which continually drew crowds to listen to his preaching.' He sometimes left his people and preached as a missionary in the counties of Broome and Chenango, and the neighboring ones of Pennsylvania. The same result followed his preaching in those sparse settlements as elsewhere. The inhabitants flocked to hear him, and were deeply affected. He was almost constantly in the midst of religious revivals from the time he entered the ministry till his health failed. He was active and influential in the Northern Associate presbytery, where he was intimate with Rev. David Porter of Catskill, Rev. Seth Williston of New Durham, Rev. David Harrowar of Sydney, who in the beginning of this century, were the great apostles of the region lying west of the Hudson, and about the head waters of the Delaware and the Susquehanna. There was nothing ornate or rhetorical in his language or manner. He was simple, earnest, clear, and persuasive. His sincerity, sympathy and feeling were irresistible. It was said of his preaching 'the word melted hearts like wax before the fire.' His few published sermons fail to exhibit his power over an audience, because they lack the expression of feature, voice and manner. In all the ministrations of his sacred profession, his manner was very solemn and impressive. In social life, and in his family, he was cheerful and humorous, and abounded in anecdote and repartee. The following extract from a newspaper notice of his widow suggests the influence she may have exerted upon her husband and children. 'She was eminent during her long life for her earnest and practical Christian spirit, the brightness and activity of her intellect, and the vivacity and attractiveness of her disposition. In labors of love for the poor, the sick, and the ignorant, she abounded. To the old, the middle-aged, and the young, her society was alike, ever delightful. Her children and all who knew her rose up to call her blessed. The vigor of her mind was not weakened, the warmth of her love was not chilled, nor the benevolence of her hand checked by her advanced years; and to a remarkable extent her bodily strength remained till her last sickness, which was of but few days' continuance.'"

Burial: Unknown, Laurel Hill Cemetery, Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania2095

"He received his classical and mathematical education chiefly under the guidance and instruction of his father. Removing, about 1800, to Parsippany, N. J., with his father, he taught, for a few years, academies, successively in Hanover, Springfield and Newark. In 1807 he removed to Franklin, Delaware county, where he studied theology under his father, whom he had accompanied, and under his elder brother, Rev. Joel T., who was then pastor of the Congregational church at that place. After receiving his license, and preaching a year in Cicero, he removed to Sherburne, where he remained three or four years as pastor of the Congregational church. The remainder of his days he devoted with great zeal and eminent success to the arduous and self-denying labors of an Evangelist. His preaching was singularly practical and searching. His doctrinal sentiments were those of St. Paul, as interpreted by Calvin. Revivals of religion almost invariably attended him whereever he went, and he did much to build up and strengthen, in their infancy, the early churches of Western New York. He was ardent in his feelings, genial in his social intercoure, tender and indulgent in all his family relations, as a lover of man and a lover of God. He died Dec. 25, 1830. Dr. Penney, his friend, and one of the ministers of Rochester, and subsequently president of Hamilton College, preached his funeral discourse from the text 'Our fathers! where are they? and the prophets? do they live forever?' The Rev. Dr. Joel Parker of New York, under date of March 12, 1870, described his friend and colaborer, Rev. Abner, 'as a little less than of a medium stature, of a compact frame, quick in his motions, as indicating a degree of nervous sensibility. His mental characteristics were peculiar, while his modes of thought were chaste, as indicating mental culture, he was distinguished for accuracy of statement and sharpness of discrimination. He was peculiarly a doctrinal preacher, and a high Calvinist. He was a very bold preacher, and an able debater. He was, at times, too, very pathetic, especially at the communion service. His discourses were not considered as eloquent throughout; but they were always replete with sound thought, often marked by passages of great power, delivered in a manner which I was always inclined to characterize as intense. With him true piety was first, and learning next. These were all -- godliness and mental discipline.'"

Farrand N B, p 222.jpg (40027 bytes)274. FARRAND NORTHROP7 LL. D. (Rev. Abner,6 Rev. Abner,5 Peter,4 James,3 John,2 Thomas1), b. March 11, 1803, at Parsippany, N,J.; m. Aug. 2, 1832, Susan Elizabeth, dau. Aaron Ogden of Parsippany, b. Oct. 22, 1810. "He graduated at Hamilton College in 1823, with the highest honor. He studied law two years. He then practised civil engineering in the employ of private companies and of the state in Western New York, and was principal of the high school at Rochester till 1831. In the autumn of that year he was appointed to the charge of the academy in Upperville, Va., where he remained till he was called to the professorship of mathematics in the University of Vermont. After a short period the department of civil engineering was added to his professorship. He filled these chairs with distinguished ability and reputation for twenty years, when the state of his wife's health compelled him to resign his professorship and seek a change of scene and climate in her native region. He has ever since resided at Parsippany, N. J. The university has, however, retained his name on their catalogue as Emeritus professor. He received the degree of LL. D. from Hamilton College, and from the University of Vermont. At the time of his appointment to his professorship, he was declared by that eminent scholar and man of science, Professor Strong (in a letter recommending his appointment to another college), to be the first mathematician of his age, in the United States, and ever since he has been a profound student for the mere love of scientific investigation and knowledge. The circumstances of his wife's illness deferred, and finally compelled him to abandon his purpose of preparing for the press some works on the higher mathematics, and especially one on curves, of a new and original character. His contributions, however, to the scientific journals, were numerous and valuable. Some of them (prize discussions) were spoken of in high terms by cotemporary men of science. Besides these he has written hydrographical and topographical reports in which were discussed abstract practical subjects, such as rail road motion and the conditions of strength and endurance of telegraph wires under the influence of winds, sleet, etc. His greatest works are his report to Professor Emmons on the altitudes of the Adirondack plateau, and lakes and mountain peaks, and his report to the New York senate of his survey of a line of slackwater navigation through the wilderness of Northern New York, from Lake Champlain to the Black River; that vast mountain region having been explored by him for the three-fold purpose of ascertaining its productive value, its geographical geology, and its possibilities for internal communication. Professor Emmons, the state geologist, who was then preparing his volume of the great national work, the Natural History of New York, applied to Prof. B. to review the whole subject, and his communication to Prof. E. was deemed by him to be of sufficient importance to be preserved in durable form, and, with all its details, it was printed in the report to the state, pp. 109-212. This communication enters somewhat into the subject of the improvement of that region by slackwater navigation, which subject he treated at much greater length, and with great ability in his report to the senate of New York, which has been mentioned. His explanations and surveys have been the basis of all the plans for developing that great mineral district, and which have all finally yielded to the Adirondack rail road, now in course of construction. In a great rail road controversy in Vermont, he was appointed by the supreme court, together with Hon. Jacob Collamer, ex-U. S. senator and postmaster general of the U. S., and the Hon. George F. Edmunds, the present U. S. senator, to hear and determine the controversy as referees. They sat together several weeks on the bench at Montpelier, the capital of the state, to hear the case. Prof. B. in the midst of all his abstractions, has kept fresh his classical learning, cultivated a forcible and agreeable style, logical, clear and exact, and performed his part in the amenities of social life, and has always been characterized by the greatest simplicity, modesty and good nature. He is well entitled to be called a great man."(*)

Abraham Kitchell, brother of Farrand Northrop, prosecuted, during about three years, a preparatory course for college at the Onondaga Academy. He applied himself to his studies with diligence and with highly creditable success, until a chronic weakness of the eyes compelled him to abandon the hope of a liberal education. His contemplative and philosophical turn of mind, notwithstanding this and other discouragements, led him to confine himself to intellectual pursuits. He continued, therefore, through life to indulge his taste for philosophy by general reading and thought on these abstruse subjects. Leaving his father's house in 1824, he passed the remaining years of his life in various localities of the southern and south-western states, in teaching and self-culture. During this period he wrote and prepared for the press an elaborate work on the prophecies of Holy Writ. The manuscript is now (1870) in the custody of his brother Farrand, and evinces labor and original research. Owing to the convulsions of the civil war, and his inadequate health, or probable decease, the work remains only in manuscript.

Joel T B, p 225.jpg (36569 bytes)276. JOEL TYLER,7 A. M. (Rev. Abner,6 Rev. Abner,5 Peter,4 James,3 John,2 Thomas1), b. Jan. 18, 1821, at Mentz; m. Aug. 23, 1849, Amanda M., dau. David and Lydia Lawrence (Brown) Brinsmaid, b. May 29, 1823. "He attended a common school before he was four years old. His father having died in December, 1831, and his mother the following month, he became a member of the family of his cousin, Rev. Richard Hutson Benedict, and with him, went, at the age of eleven years, to Oakland county, Mich., then a wilderness. The desire of knowledge urged him to overcome the difficulties in his way. Obliged to perform certain duties on the farm, he was accustomed to perform them, in winter, several hours before daylight, and then tramp four miles through the snow to the nearest settlement and school-house, and, after school and the tramp home, more work awaited him. So he lived until the fall of 1837, when he went into the family of his brother Farrand, in Burlington, Vt., and fitted for college in the Burlington high school. He entered the University of Vermont in 1839, and was graduated with honor in 1843. His instructors in college were the distinguished scholars: the Rev. Dr. Wheeler, president; Dr. Marsh, professor of metaphysics; Dr. Torrey, of Latin and Greek; Farrand N. Benedict (his brother), of mathematics; and George W. Benedict (his cousin), of chemistry and natural history; and he has always enjoyed their confidence and friendship. His brother Abner was his class-mate and chum, and both graduated with honor. He showed no special predeliction for any one branch of learning, but that equal love for all which has ever since characterized him. After graduation, he was employed in civil engineering, until his health required him to relinquish that occupation. He was then engaged in private teaching until 1848, when he took charge of the Burlington High school, in which he had been prepared for college. Under his management, the institution had unwonted prosperity, the number of scholars increasing rapidly five-fold. In 1850 he removed to New York city, and after giving private instruction for about a year, he was appointed tutor of mathematics in the Free Academy, since known as the College of the city of New York. In 1852 he was appointed professor of civil engineering, and in 1857, adjunct professor of mathematics, in the same institution. His only published work is a treatise on Algebra, which in a short time ran through nine editions. He applied his powers with singular zeal and affection to the laborious duties of his professorship. Graduates of the New York College are to be found in every state of the union, occupying positions of honor and trust, who will remember him affectionately as an indefatigable worker in their interest, and many of them as a valued counsellor and friend. In his relations to the faculty, his voice was ever in favor of the highest standard of scholarship compatible with the practical character which at the start was sought to be impressed upon the institution. Mr. Benedict's private library, which has been steadily growing from the time he left college, is a pretty fair measure of the scope and range of his studies, and his taste for the quiet life of a student. of this library, Dr. Torrey, the professor referred to above, and the translator of Neander's History of the Christian Church, and a scholar of fine bibliographical knowledge, said to the writer of this notice, that it was, for its size, among the most select he had seen. In this, all departments of inquiry are represented by choice treatises, mathematical, philosophical, artistic and literary, as well as by a good catalogue of works on physical science generally. He is, by the general consent of those knowing him the best, and the best qualified to pass upon his merits, an accomplished mathematician, specially, and generally an advanced scholar."
