In 1662 he removed with his father's family to Jamaica, and in the year following the town granted him a "home lot" and "ten (10) acres of meadow." I conjecture, from this grant and from the fact that, Sept. 29, 1663, he signed with others a petition to be taken under the government of Connecticut, that he was of age. Dec. 13, 1663, he was appointed "to gather the rate made for the purchase of the Hills." He m. 11.  SAMUEL5 BENEDICT (THOMAS4, WILLIAM3, GEORGE2, GEORGE1)54,55 was born 1645 in Southold, Long Island, Suffolk County, New York55, and died 17 Apr 1719 in Danbury, Fairfield County, Connecticut56,57.  He married (1) MARY MARVIN57,58 Abt. 1671 in Norwalk, Fairfield County, Connecticut59,60, daughter of MATTHEW MARVIN and MARY.  She was born 1658 in Norwalk, Fairfield County, Connecticut60, and died 22 Jul 1711 in Norwalk, Fairfield County, Connecticut60.  He married (2) REBECCA ANDREWS61,62 07 Jul 1678 in Norwalk, Fairfield County, Connecticut63,64, daughter of THOMAS ANDREWS.  She was born 1651 in Fairfield, Fairfield County, Connecticut64, and died Unknown.

Notes for SAMUEL BENEDICT:

"Henry Marvin Benedict, The Genealogy of the Benedicts in America,  (Joel Munsell, 82 State Street, Albany, NY, 1870), pages 241-242."

1. SAMUEL2 (Thomas1), was born 164-. He continued to reside with his father until after his removal to Norwalk, Ct. There he married, first (unknown), by whom he had Joanna and Samuel. He married, second, July 7, 1678,(*) Rebecca, dau. of Thomas Andrews of Fairfield, Ct., by whom he had five children, the last two born in Danbury, Ct. In the fall of 1684 and the spring of 1685, he, with his brother James, his brother-in-law James Beebe, Judah Gregory (brother-in-law of James Benedict), and four others, purchased land of the Indians and made the first settlement at Paquiogue (Danbury).(+) Dr. Samuel Wood, who married Rebecca, dau. of Thomas1 Benedict, soon followed, and Daniel, youngest son of Thomas1 Benedict, also, settled there, soon after 1690. Thus it will be seen that the majority of the first settlers of Danbury were of the Benedict stock and connection. "They soon built a little church, only forty feet by thirty; when its frame was raised every person in the town was present and sat together on the sills." Samuel Benedict, a Deacon of the church, while a resident of Norwalk, was also first Deacon of this church. He conveyed his Norwalk property, Feb. 3, 1685. He is named as patentee in the patent of Danbury, granted by the General Assembly, May, 1702.(*) His will, made at Danbury, April 15, 1719, was recorded March 20, 1719. His inventory, made April 17, 1719, shows a total of 185 11s. 5d. The will mentions wife Rebecca, Samuel (eldest son), to whom is bequeathed "my great Bible;" Samuel Benedict, son of Thomas Benedict, "my second son, deceased" who received "my martir book;" two youngest sons, Nathaniel and Abraham; heirs of Thomas Benedict, "my second son, deceased," "as one child," [i. e., to take as one child,] and Benoni [to take] "half so much as one child." It, also, mentions daughters Rebecca and Esther.
(*) Samuel Benedict bought in 1678 a home lot upon Dry Hill, 4 acres. Hall, p. 28.
(+) "They [i. e., the first settlers] lived near together, at the south end of Town street; the two Benedicts on the east side." Robbins's Century Sermon, p. 9. "The house of Mr. Samuel Benedict, at the south-east corner of the street, and the house of Rev. Mr. Shove, were, in the early part of the century, placed in a posture of defense against the Indians. When they were apprehensive of danger, all the families used to repair to these two houses, especially nights." Robbins, p. 11.

Notes for MARY MARVIN:

"Henry Marvin Benedict, The Genealogy of the Benedicts in America,  (Joel Munsell, 82 State Street, Albany, NY, 1870), page 365."

The Marvin Genealogy does not mention Mary among the children of Matthew,2 but, as there was but one family of the name among the early settlers of Connecticut, and as I find in vol. V, p. 267, of Norwalk Deeds that property is recorded Feb. 15, 1722-3 to "Lieut. Daniel Benedict of Danbury on ye accompanyment of his brother, Matthew Marvin, deceased," I conclude that she was the daughter of Matthew2 Marvin. (See Hall, p. 181, and Marvin Genealogy.)

Compiler's note:

The following is incorrect as it pertains to the Marvin Genealogy.    Mary is mentioned as Matthew Marvin's daughter on page 301.  I present the following:

"George Franklin Marvin and William T.R. Marvin, Descendants of Reinold and Matthew Marvin of Hartford, Connecticut, 1638 and 1635 Sons of Edward Marvin of Great Bentley, England,  (Boston: T.R. Marvin and Son, 1904), pages 299-301."

3 MATTHEW,2 son of Matthew1 and Elizabeth Marvin, baptized 8 Nov., 1626, in St. Mary's Church, Great Bentley, England; died in 1712, in Norwalk, Ct. He came with his father in the "Increase." He married, probably about 1650, Mary (???); she was living 28 March, 1707, at which time he made deeds of gift of all his estate to his sons Samuel and John, providing for her support; she probably died about 1709. He left no will, and the deeds mention only his daughter Hannah and a child of Elizabeth: they cover several pages in Norwalk Land Rec. (IV: 155 et seq.) He was in Norwalk certainly as early as 1651-2, and perhaps was one of the "thirty approved families" mentioned in the Agreement, 19 June, 1650, with Roger Ludlow, then of Fairfield, Ct., though not named in that document. .........

dated 15 Feb., 1722/3,(+) speaks of "Lieut. Daniel Benedict

Marvin deceased." He was a soldier in King Philip's war,
and took part in the "Direful Swamp-fight," 19 Dec., 1675,

JOHN.  She was born Abt. 1650 in Norwalk, Fairfield County, Connecticut112,113, and died 12 May 1737 in Norwalk, Fairfield County, Connecticut113,114.

1. JOHN2 (Thomas1), born at Southold, L. I., removed with the family to Norwalk and married Phoebe, daughter of John and Sarah Gregory(*) of that town, Nov. 11, 1670.(+) He was a freeman of Norwalk in 1680, and succeeded his father as selectman in 1689. He was a selectman in 1692-94 and '99; and also held some minor civil appointments in the town. He was occupied, however, mainly, with church affairs, having become Deacon, probably, upon the death of his father. Thenceforth the records show him to have been constantly on committees having charge of the religious and educational interests of the community, now "obtaining a minister," then, "hyering a schoolmaster." In 1705 the church honored him by voting him a sitting "in ye seat before ye pulpit." He served as representative in the General Assembly in the sessions of 1722 and 1725. The date of his death is not to be ascertained, nor is that of his wife. The volume of probate records, which probably covered the time within which they died, unfortunately, is missing. He conveyed property to his sons James and Joseph of Ridgefield, in 1722 and 1723; and that he was living in 1727, is thought to be certain, because his son is then referred to as Deacon John Benedict Junior.         Henry6 Gregory, of Boston, N. E., whom we find mentioned in the foregoing pedigree, was at Springfield 1639, and removed in a few years to Stratford, Ct. Savage says that he probably died soon after, as a distribution of his estate was ordered 19 June, 1665, his eldest son John being appointed administrator, and to receive double portion, and that no other children are mentioned; though perhaps Judah Gregory of Springfield, who m. 1643, Sarah, dau. of Henry Burt, was another son. John Gregory, of New Haven, and afterwards of Norwalk, Ct., was possibly the administrator above referred to; he had Joseph, bapt. 26 July, 1646; Thomas, 19 March, 1648; his other children and their issue are mentioned by Savage, and by Hall in his history of Norwalk; of his daus. [Phoebe and Sarah], m. into the family of Thomas Benedict, of Southold, L. I., and afterwards of Norwalk, who came out at the age of 22 about 1639, and was said to be the only son of Wm. Benedict of Nottingham. N. E. Hist. and Gen. Reg., vol. XXIII, pp. 304-7. Thomas Benedict was a witness to will of John Gregory of Norwalk, Ct., made Aug. 15, 1689. He bequeathed his estate to his wife Sarah. John and James Benedict (sons of Thomas) are mentioned as sons-in-law. Sarah also, in an instrument, dated Oct. 9, 1689, so names them. Prob. Rec. (Fairfield), vol. 3.

Notes for LIEUTENANT DANIEL BENEDICT:

"Henry Marvin Benedict, The Genealogy of the Benedicts in America,  (Joel Munsell, 82 State Street, Albany, NY, 1870), pages 365-366."

1. Lieut. DANIEL2 (Thomas1) Benedict was born at Southold, L. I., 165-, and after his removal to Norwalk, Ct., married Mary, dau. of Matthew2 Marvin(*) of Norwalk, Ct. (Hall, p. 182). He was a soldier in the direful swamp fight, Dec. 19, 1675, a fight which has scarcely a parallel in the annals of ancient or modern warfare. At a town (Norwalk) meeting, Jan. 12, 1676: "The towne in consideration of the good service that the soldiers sent out of the towne ingaged and performed by them, and out of respect and thankfulness to the sayd soldiers, doe with one consent and freely give and grant to so many as were in the direful swamp fight twelve acors of land; and eight acors of land to so many as were in the next considerable service." Accordingly, there was granted by the plantation, as a gratuity unto Daniel Benedict, "being a souldier in the Indian warr twelfe acres of land and lyeth in three parcels." (Hall, p. 63.) He sold his property in Norwalk, March 25, 1690, and moved to Danbury, Ct. The date of his death is not known. He was certainly living Feb. 15, 1722-3. His signature is attached to a deed bearing date Aug. 17, 1717. Norwalk Records.

(IV: 155 et seq.) He was in Norwalk certainly as early as 1651-2, and perhaps was one of the "thirty approved families" mentioned in the Agreement, 19 June, 1650, with Roger Ludlow, then of Fairfield, Ct., though not named in that document. .........

and took part in the "Direful Swamp-fight," 19 Dec., 1675,

Notes for CAPT THOMAS BENEDICT:

Served in the Indian Wars, and because of that received a grant of lant. He appears to have always been active in the military and never without military ranck, being call sergeant, esign, lieutenant, and captain by 1746, this latter title remaining with him the rest of his days. He was chosen selectman at least 7 times, and chairman of the annual town meetings at least 10 times.  He was a representative in the General Assembly several times.  Thomas was also active in the church, and had an exceptional tone of voice.
Thomas' will is dated 20 May 1673, proved 5 July 1763.  His wife survived him.

"Henry Marvin Benedict, The Genealogy of the Benedicts in America,  (Joel Munsell, 82 State Street, Albany, NY, 1870), pages 53 and 54."

Thomas appears to have possessed a strong desire for military distinction, together with so much aptitude for affairs of that character, that during his whole life, he was never without some military rank. He comes before us as "Sergeant," in 1713; as "Ensign," in 1724; as "Lieutenant," in 1742, and as "Captain," in 1746; this latter title adhering to him for the rest of his life. It is very evident, however, that civil position was not distasteful to him; for he was chosen selectman not less than seven times, and moderator of the annual town meetings at least ten times; the last occasion being the year preceding his death. He was representative in the General Assembly, probably in 1737 and 1740, and certainly in 1744. He exhibited the family tendency to do service in the church. Dec. 2, 1724, the town desires him "to sett ye tune to ye Psalme, at such times as that part of service is to be performed in ye publik worship of God; and to read ye Psalmes needed; ye town, also Seat ye said Bennedick in ye 3d long seat at ye end of ye middle alley." The power of his voice must have been something remarkable, for it is stated on credible authority that he could be heard and understood at the distance of more than a mile. It is probable he was a Deacon of the church (Congregational) of which he and his wife were members (1725), but the loss of the church records prevents certain knowledge on this point. His will bears date May 20, 1763, and was proved July 5, 1763.(*) He died, of course, in the interval between those dates. His wife survived him, but the date of her death is not known.  Ch. all b. in Norwalk.-- (See Hall's Hist. Norwalk, Ct., pp. 113, 114, 125.)
(*) In the Name of God, Amen. The 20th day of May, A D 1763. I Thomas Benedict of Norwalk, in the County Fairfield and Colony of Connecticut, being weak of body but of sound mind and memory, and willing to mind my mortality, do make and ordain this my last will and testament. And as touching such worldly estate wherewith it hath pleased God to bless me with in this Life I will, devise and bequeath the Same in manner and form following: My will is yt my just debts and funeral charges be first paid out of my moveable estate. Imprimus: I give and bequeath unto my well beloved wife Millisson Benedict all my household goods and furniture to be her own forever; also, the use and improvement of my dwelling house and the one half part of my real estate during her natural life in lieu and in full of her dowry. Item. I give and bequeath unto my two sons John Benedict and Seth Benedict and my daughter Betty Betts, and to each of them, their heirs and assigns forever, twenty five pounds lawful money to be taken out of my Real Estate according to the apprizal of said Estate. Item. I give and bequeath unto my two grandsons Stephen Benedict and Uriah Benedict and to each of them, their heirs and assigns forever, ten pounds lawful money; and, also, to my grand daughter Betty Benedict and to her heirs forever, five pounds lawful money, to be taken out of my Real Estate according to the apprizal of said estate. Item. I give and bequeath unto my loving sons Ebenezer, John, Seth and my daughter Betty Betts, and to their heirs, the four sixth parts of the residue and remainder of my estate, both real and personal. Item. I give and bequeath unto my grandsons Jesse Benedict and David Benedict, the one sixth part of the afore mentioned residue and remainder, viz: To Jesse and to his heirs forever, the two third parts of the last mentioned sixth part of the aforesaid remainder: and to David, the one third part of ye aforesaid sixth part to his heirs forever. Item. I give and bequeath unto the surviving children of my son Thomas Benedict, late deceased, and to their heirs forever the other sixth part of the aforementioned residue and remainder not before disposed of, to be equally divided among them. I likewise constitute, make and ordain my loving sons Ebenezer, John and Seth Executors of this my last will and Testament ratifying and confirming this and no other to be my last will and Testament. 32.  ESQUIRE JAMES6 BENEDICT (JOHN5, THOMAS4, WILLIAM3, GEORGE2, GEORGE1)324 was born 05 Jan 1684/85 in Norwalk, Fairfield County, Connecticut324, and died 25 Nov 1762 in Ridgefield, Fairfield County, Connecticut325.  He married SARAH HYATT326 07 Apr 1709 in Norwalk, Fairfield County, Connecticut326, daughter of THOMAS HYATT and MARY.  She was born Dec 1686 in of Norwalk, Fairfield County, Connecticut326, and died 09 Feb 1767326.

Notes for ESQUIRE JAMES BENEDICT:

As a child, James lived with his grandparents, and remembering what his grandmother had told him, was the first to write about the Benedict family.  His book was titled GENEALOGY OF THE FAMILY OF THE BENEDICTS and was dated 14 Mar 1755.  This book is the basis of all future books, having been copied by his grandson, Abner, in June of 1768.
The tombstones of James and his wife were located in Ridgefield, Connecticut. It records that he was the first deacon of the Church of Christ in Ridgefield.  He was age 77, she was 81.
James purchased land from Catoohah, the chief sachem.  That land lay between the town of Norwalk  and the town of Danbury, and came to be known as Ridgefield.  James was prominent in the town's affairs, serving as fence-viewer, ensign, captain, esquire, justice of the peace, and representative.

"Henry Marvin Benedict, The Genealogy of the Benedicts in America,  (Joel Munsell, 82 State Street, Albany, NY, 1870), pages 51 and 52."

"In 1708 he and other inhabitants of Norwalk purchased a large tract of land between that town and Danbury. The purchase was made of Catoonah the chief sachem, and other Indians, who were the proprietors of that part of the country. Deed bears date Sept. 30, 1708. At the Norwalk town session, 1709, it was ordained that it should be a distinct township by the name of Ridgefield." (Trumbull, p. 460). James was also one of the original settlers of this township. Fence-viewer in 1715, called Ensign, 1719, afterwards Captain, and, 1737, Esquire. He was appointed justice of the peace for Fairfield county, Ct., May, 1732, and was reappointed annually until 1733. He was representative for Ridgefield, from May, 1740-45, and 1748-1752. He was the first to write the genealogy of the Benedict family. In his youth he lived with his grandmother, Mary Bridgum, wife of Thomas, and she delivered to him, from her own mouth, the genealogy down to his own memory, and he reduced it to writing. His Genealogy of the Family of the Benedicts, dated March 14, 1755, has been the foundation of all the subsequent ones. His grandson, Abner Benedict, a member of the junior class in Yale College, made an exact copy of it, June 23, 1768. James was the second Deacon of the church in Ridgefield, till old age and its attendants rendered him unable to serve. He sustained the character of a pious and exemplary Christian. His death occurred Nov. 25, 1762. The following inscription is on his gravestone in Ridgefield.

Notes for SARAH HYATT:

"Henry Marvin Benedict, The Genealogy of the Benedicts in America,  (Joel Munsell, 82 State Street, Albany, NY, 1870), pages 52 and 53."

Thomas Hyatt was active and brave enough in the Indian wars of his time to incite the town to make to him a grant of land as a testimonial of its gratitude, and a requital of his services. Millison, b. Dec., 1686, was twin-sister of Sarah, who became the wife of Dea. James3 (5) Benedict of Ridgefield.

Note: Further research has determined that Capt Thomas Benedict married Millicent Hoyt not Millison Hyatt.  However, Millison must still be Sarah's twin sister.                                               Steven Lusk

Burial: Unknown, Ridgefield, Fairfield County, Connecticut329

Individual Note: Sarah is the twin sister of Millison Hyatt329
