Chapter One Part Two

“Darien, I’m sorry for making you fall down the hill. It’s just when you looked at me I saw…”

Serena looked at Darien. His eyes searched hers. His head was coming close to hers. She lay, waiting for his kiss. She would be denied what she wanted, what she desperately craved for. Darien got off her and his strong hands picked her up off the ground. He looked at her cautiously his eyes asking forgiveness. He walked away leaving a sad and surprised Serena. She watched him walk up the hill until he was out of sight. She walked alongside the bottom of the hill to a bench over looking the late. She sat there for a few minutes then got up and went home. A smile spread across her face. She fantasized about what almost happened as she walked through her front door.

* He loves me. I know I don’t know for sure, but. I’m pretty sure that’s what I saw in his eyes. *

She sat down at her desk and began to work out her math Homework. It had been 2 weeks since the dawn of her new habits. She was actually getting good grades much to the surprise of her parents and little brother. When she was done she got in her night - clothes and drifted off to sleep. She dreamt of Darien being Romeo and her Juliet.

< **************************************************************************** >

He didn’t know what to do. Surely when Serena and him had fell down the hill he had almost kissed her. She even wanted it. He couldn’t believe she wanted to kiss him. But wait ‘til she finds out he was going to be Romeo. He can’t wait to see her face Friday. He got into his bed and fell asleep. All the while dreaming of his dear Meatball Head.

Friday finally came around and Serena happily skipped down the side - walk to the Theater. Today was the day she would met her Romeo. Then a dark cloud flooded her cheery thoughts. That girl frightened her so much.

* I hope she doesn’t try to hurt me. I wonder who will be my Romeo. It would be sooooo way cool if it were Darien. *

She walked into the Theater. Sets were being built costumes laid out, and makeup being picked for actors and actresses. She walked up to the director and tapped him of the back. He jumped and whirled around. His face turned bright at the sight off Serena.

“Ahh. My Juliet has arrived! Janelle! I want you to pick out her makeup and make sure the costume fits and is to her liking. Get her anything she desires.”

Janelle ushered her to a chair sitting in front of a mirror surrounded by lights. Makeup lay scattered on the vanity. The girl traced Serena’s hair with her hands.

“You have the most beautiful hair I’ve ever seen!”

Serena blushed at her praise.

“Thank you.”

“Do you mind if I take it down and fix it to that of Juliet’s?”

“No, no go ahead.”

Janelle smiled and proceeded to take down her hair. Serena had to stand up so the girl could brush all of it. Her hair swept the ground when she would transfer her weight from one foot to the other. Janelle was called to another duty, but she said she would be back in a sec and to sit in the chair. Serena didn’t feel like sitting so she walked around a bit. Unknown to her she was being watched. Darien had never seen her with her hair down. She looked so beautiful. Like and Angel. No, like a grown woman. She walked with grace and maturity. Darien stared at his ‘Meatball Head’. He was about to say hi when this girl came a whisked her away. He followed them and watched as the girl played with Serena’s hair putting it in different positions. The girl curled all of Serena’s hair and pilled it on top of her head keeping it in place with many hair pens. Stray curls fell defiantly. The girl gave up on trying to pen them up and left them were they fell. She then placed this golden tiara with a pink heart placed in the middle of it on top of her head. Her already beautiful features were touched up lightly with makeup.

Darien’s breath caught in his throat while he watched his beautiful Goddess. He walked back to his dressing room and fit into his costume. The reason he was doing this was because he was friends’ with the director’s father. He owed him one so he agreed. Now he was extremely happy he said yes. He waited on stage for Serena. When she approached he put on a dashing smile. He watched as she looked at him.

“Darien?!”

“Hi, Meatball Head.”

“What are you doing here?”

“Well, playing Romeo. What else?”

He watched as Serena blushed.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“You never asked.”

They were suddenly interrupted by the Director.

“Good! Our actors have met! Now come on. We will work on our blocking then we will start our lines.”

He handed Darien a script, but he gave it back to him. The director gave him a strange look.

“I already know my lines sir.”

The director beamed.

“That is such good news! Now you and Miss Serena can practice without having to look at your lines!”

The director stopped and pinched himself before he left and walked off smiling and making happy noises. He sounded like a 5 year - old who just got an ice - cream. Serena looked at Darien.

“You like Shakespeare?”

Darien put his hand behind his head embarrassed.

“Well, yeah. Romeo and Juliet is a good play.”

Serena smiled.

“Yep!”

They heard the director call for their attention.

“All right every one today we will work on the first act.”

Everyone scattered every which way. It was a long days work for all. When rehearsal was over Serena took down her hair. It was a mass of curls. She took two barrettes out of her pocket and clipped back her hair. She turned to leave when Darien walked up to her. She looked at him nervously.

“Hey Serena.”

“Hi Darien.”

“Well, Serena I was wondering if I could walk you out.”

Serena gave him a smile.

“If you promise not to call me Meatball Head.”

Darien gave her a heart - wrenching smile. They walked down the red carpet to the main doors. Serena saw the murderous stare she was getting from the self - made Barbie. She smiled at her and walked faster away. Darien had to jog a little to keep up with her.

“What’s a matter Serena?”

“That girl keeps stalking me. I don’t know what I did to her.”

“She is probably jealous.”

“Of what?”

Darien looked at her.

“Are you really that blind?”

Serena looked at him curiously. He grabbed her arm and ushered her to a store window.

“Serena what do you see?”

Serena looked from Darien to the store window. Her reflection stared back at her.

“A plain, short, scrony, stupid girl who trips over her own shadow?”

“What makes you say that?”

Darien put his hands on her shoulder and turned her to the glass. He leaned down so his mouth was close to her ear. His breath was warm and tickled her ear.

“I’ll tell you what I see. I see a young, bright, happy, loving, and giving girl. Who is the one person the roses compete with in beauty. A girl that where ever she goes she makes everybody happy. A girl that fills the darkest of hearts with light. You are the glittering star that shines bright in the sky to give everyone hope and comfort. Don’t let anyone tell you differently. Least of all me.”

He took his hands off her shoulders and walked away. Serena kept staring at her reflection.

* Could he really see all that? I wonder if I am right. Maybe he does love me. *

Serena walked home arguing with herself whether or not she loved Darien back. When she got home she absently ate dinner. Taking slow bites in stead of inhaling the whole thing. Everybody could tell there was something bothering her. She stood up and started to leave the house.

“Serena! Serena Honey where are you going?”

“I’m going to take a walk mom!”

“Be back before 11:00!”

“Thanks mom!”
