The Complete Soapmaker by Norma Coney

Review by Jessica / Rose-Kim Handmade Toiletries

This was the first soapmaking book I ever read. After reading it I decided that soapmaking was too complicated and didn't actually make soap for another three years. Coney's book teaches soapmakers how to create some basic base soaps which can be used for rebatching. All but one of the recipes are for animal fat based soaps and includes tallow rendering instructions. Reading this book, I felt this was the only way to make soap and,  since I wanted to make vegetable soaps, I was put off  by it.  One positive note on the book is that it includes instructions on making translucent soaps by rebatching.

Among the many complaints about this book is Coney's instructions to pour water into lye rather than lye into water. This is a very dangerous practice. She also suggest the use of fabric dyes for coloring. Her rebatching instructions call for a tremendous amount of water. All in all, this book is of little use to a new soapmaker.
