CHARLOTTE- PROVIDENCE LIONS CLUB
HISTORY
During the 2002- 2003 Lionistic year, due to the growing Hispanic presence in Charlotte, members of the SOUTHPARK Lions Club (SPLC), discussed the viability of creating a new Lions Club with the Hispanic Community support. The effort was led by PDGs Jim Sasser and Hunter Garbee and Lions Victor Benavides, Miguel Cerpa and Raul Farroch. The effort however, proved to be premature.
In the spring of 2008 the effort was revived. PDG Hunter Garbee and Lions Raul Farroch, Jack Hagopian and Cesar Perez- Sanchez held a series of planning meetings to devise a strategy for creating a new Lions Club. The series of meetings led to the following synopsis:
(1) Concept- To create a new Lions Club that would stress diversity, service and cyberspace.
(2) Location- The new club would meet at St. GABRIEL Church at the intersection of Providence and Sharon Amity Roads.
(3) Cyberspace- To design an interactive web-site.
(4) Meetings- The club would hold a membership meeting on the last Tuesday of each month and a Board of Directors planning session each month.
(5) Diversity- Every segment of the community was invited to apply for membership: Americans, Asians, Hispanics, etc.
The news of the prospective new club spread quickly and new members began to complete membership applications. Conversations quickly led to the decision to create a SouthPark Lions BRANCH Club. It would later be named the PROVIDENCE Lions Club for the area in which it met.
On June 20, 2008 fifteen (15) New Lions were inducted as SPLC BRANCH members, by PDG RON STALEY, during the SouthPark Lions Club’s Installation & Awards Banquet, at St GABRIEL Church. Lion Cesar Perez- Sanchez (SPLC) was appointed as SPLC BRANCH Coordinator.
On Sep 13, 2008 the following Board of Directors was chosen for the Branch Club: President- PDG Hunter Garbee
Vice-President- Lion Carmen Lira
Secretary- Lion Clara Herran
Treasurer- Lion Miguel Lopez
Lion Tamer- Lion Roberto Hiller and
Membership Chair- Lion Victor Benavides
Beginning in August 2008 the SPLC BRANCH Club participated in and helped sponsor the following Services Projects:
