Ronald Reagan played an integral part in bringing peace by ending the Cold War. He reestablished American military dominance by drastically increasing military spending and used his Strategic Defense Initiative to help both by serving as a bargaining tool in terms of US-USSR negotiations and to help force the Soviet Union to spend more money on arms buildups. Ultimately, this played a crucial role in bankrupting the USSR and ending the Cold War. Reagan also displayed excellent flexibility in that he was able to put aside decades of animosity between the United States and Russia in order to come to several agreements with Soviet Leader Gorbachev concerning the disarmament of nuclear weapons on both sides.
