Giordano Bruno statue in Campo dei fiori

Campo dei fiori in Rome is a public square bustling with outdoor fruit and vegetable markets by day and a favorite crowded hangout spot by night. At the middle of the piazza is this brooding statue of philosopher Giordano Bruno, who was accused of being a heretic by the Church and burned at the stake in 1600. His supposed blasphemy involved his beliefs that the earth revolves around the sun and that the stars in the sky are like the sun. Later in 1889 this statue was built in his honor on the spot where he was executed and eventually the Church under John Paul II acknowledged its regret in killing him off.
