The Surfers Paradise Automobile Racing Club (SPARC) was
formed in the mid 60's as the host club for the newly completed Surfers Paradise
Racing Track. This was back in the days when a track was not allowed to run race
meetings without a host club.
A Quick backwards look:
1954 A.W. Davison, HWM Jaguar won the Australian Grand Prix at Southport.
1959 R.K. Phillips, Cooper Jaguar won the Australian Tourist Trophy at Lowood.
1960 A. Mildren, Cooper Maserati won the Australian Grand Prix at Lowood.
1963 I. Geoghean, Lotus XXIII won the Australian Tourist Trophy at Lowood.
The smart men realised that a track was needed closer to a greater audience, and the Surfers Paradise racing track was started.
Lakeside had been built in the early 60's. Two A.G.P.'s were held there one in 1966 won by G. Hill, B.R.M., and1969 won by C. Amon, Ferrari.
The first big race meeting held at this newly completed track, which the newly formed club hosted was the 1967 Australian Tourist Trophy won by F. Matich in a Matich SR3.
The club's and tracks crowning glory was in
1975 when it hosted the A.G.P. won by M. Stewart in a Lola T400. In 1969
S.P.A.R.C. had enough members and organised their own club championship.
