Living space. why a ten gallon tank won't work.
This page will tell you how much space your iguana needs to live, and how to give it to him. First of all when you bring your iguana home his cage should already be set up. we will discuss cage set up on the heat and lighting page.
if you are getting a small iguana, it is a good idea to have at least a fifty gallon aquarium set up for it. these little guys grow quickly in the first year after they are born. Therefore they need room to grow. don't be misled, the green iguana will grow to be five to six feet as an adult. and it is not true that if you keep it in a small cage it will only grow a little. the iguana will keep growing no matter what. So be on the safe side, and give your iguana pleanty of room to roam.
After your iguana is comfortable in his tank, he will need water to deficate in, and a seperate source for drinking.(further talk of this on the feeding page.)He will also need a branch to climb on,a place to hide, and a place to soak up the warmth of the lights.
My suggestion is to go to your local pet store(petco is my favorite)and get a climbing stick and a hide box from the reptile section. If you decide however to get a branch from the great outdoors, you must soak it in a bleach solution for twenty four hours and allow it to dry completly before putting it in the cage. This disinfects and rids the branch of any microscopic bugs and parasites that can be harmfull to your iguana's health. The bleach solution should be two cups bleach per gallon of water.
The next thing you want to do is set up an appointment with the vetrinarian to get your iguana checked for any viruses and parasites it may have, and to get it sexed to determine whether you have a boy or a girl.Belive it or not, iguana's need vets too. Probably more than your cat or dog!
The good thing is that they're a little bit less expensive as far as vet bills are concerned. More expensive though as far as feeding and maintenence. For more info on feeding, please go to the garden.
