Small Miracles By Mel Bone
Blair
Sandburg slowly woke to a completely dark environment.
Lying there for a few minutes, he wondered where he was.
He knew he wasn’t in the Loft and the last place he remembered being
was at the station with Jim.
So
where was he now? Laying quietly,
he listened to the sounds around him. There
was a screeching sound like metal rubbing against metal, and the sound of
someone moaning softly next to him.
Someone
moaning next to him, Blair jumped at the sound, almost sitting straight up, but
he soon regretted the motion, when he was greeted with a wave of dizziness and
nausea.
Placing
a hand to his head, Blair slowly laid back down.
Taking a deep breath, he waited for the darkness to stop spinning around
him.
The
moaning sound next to him suddenly stopped, as if someone was holding their
breath, then through the darkness came a weak female voice.
“Is anyone there?” she whispered.
Blair
felt a hand on his arm, and jumped slightly.
“Are
you awake?” she whispered again.
“Yeah,
Are you ok?” Blair asked.
“I
think so, I was so afraid I was here all by myself.”
“Do
you know what happened?”
“No,
the last thing I remember was going to the Police station. My car was stolen”
“Well,
that’s the last place I remember being too, so I gather we’re still in the
station somewhere.”
Major
Crimes was in chaos, filing cabinets were over turned, papers were scattered
everywhere, and the lights were flickering on and off.
People were hiding under desks, in doorways, anywhere they could to avoid
the falling debris.
Then,
as suddenly as it started, the shaking stopped.
Detective Jim Ellison was the first to come out from under his desk, he
slowly helped up the young lady who he had pushed under there when the
earthquake had begun.
Captain
Simon Banks came running out of his office, looking around the bullpen and
assessing the damage.
“Is
everyone ok?” he asked
A
choruses of Yes’s echoed thought out the bullpen.
“Alright
people, as long as everyone’s ok, we better start getting this place back in
order, and make sure everyone is accounted for, and be prepared for what ever
damage this may have caused to the city.”
With
that said everyone picked themselves up and dusting themselves off started the
long tedious job of cleaning up after the earthquake.
Blair
decided it was time he found out where he was, and slowly lifted himself into a
sitting position, groaning as another wave of dizziness swept over him.
“Are
you ok?” asked the female voice
“Yeah,
I just thought I’d try and find out where we are.”
Blair
took a few deep breaths, waiting for the nausea to subside.
“I’m
Blair Sandburg by the way,” he said, finally realising he had no idea who he
was with
“Lucy Goldwin.”
Reaching
out his hand Blair came in contact with a cool metal surface, following it
around, it didn’t take him long to realise where he was.
Suddenly
Blair couldn’t get enough air into his lungs, as he remembered the last time
he had been trapped inside an elevator.
Blair
suddenly became aware of someone calling his name, and a soft touch on his arm.
Taking a few deep breaths; he brought himself back under control.
“Are
you Ok?” Lucy asked.
Shakily Blair ran his hands through his hair, “Um yeah, I think
we’re trapped in the elevator.”
Simon was just hanging up the phone, when Jim knocked and entered his office. “What’s the damage?” Simon asked.
“Amazingly enough, not much, the elevators are out, but
we’ve got a repair crew on their way. Other
than some broken furniture and bits and pieces scattered all over the place, it
shouldn’t be much more than a clean up job.”
“Yep, that’s pretty much the same for the entire city, we were
lucky. OK, get out of here and
start cleaning up.” Simon ordered.
As Jim turned to leave, Detective Brown entered the office.
“Captain, everyone’s been accounted for except
Sandburg.”
Simon looked at Jim.
“It’s ok, he was heading back to the university, I’ll
give him a call, just to make sure.”
Blair and Lucy had been in the elevator for about 20 minutes
now. After trying Blair’s cell
phone and discovering it was out of service, they tried yelling for help, but
that proved fruitless as well.
Lucy was still sitting on the floor watching the dark figure
of Blair pace back and forth, her eyes had long since became adjusted to the
dark. She noticed the longer they
were trapped, the more agitated Blair became.
“Blair.” Lucy spoke quietly.
“Yeah.”
“So what are you doing at the station?” Lucy decided a
good way to distract Blair was to get his mind off the fact they were trapped.
“Um, I kinda work here.”
“You’re a cop?”
“No, I’m an anthropologist.”
“An anthropologist, and you work with the Police?”
Lucy’s plan was working; Blair finally stopped pacing and sat down next to
her. He began telling her about his
life.
Jim hung up the phone.
“He never turned up at the university.”
“Maybe he got stuck in traffic,” suggested Simon
“Maybe, I’ve just got this feeling that he’s still
here.”
“Well, you’re the Sentinel.”
Jim looked at Simon.
“What, you need Sandburg’s permission to use your
senses?” Simon said sarcastically.
Jim took a few deep breaths, and hearing his partner’s voice, telling him to concentrate, he began searching the building for his
Guide.
“…. I’ve been working with Jim ever since.” Jim heard
Blair say
“Wow that was quite a story….”
“He’s here, someone else is with him.”
“Where, Jim?” urged Simon
“The elevators.” Jim threw over his shoulder as he headed
in that direction.
Jim stopped as he got to the elevators, reaching out, he
tried to pry open the doors with his bare hands, all the while calling out his
partner’s name.
“Here Jim, try this.” Simon passed Jim a crowbar.
The doors finally gave way.
Jim and Simon peered down into the dark shaft.
Using his senses, Jim searched for the elevator car.
“There it is, about two floors down.” Jim replied as he
headed for the stairway.
Stopping at the fifth floor, Jim once again pried open the elevator doors, spying the car a few meters down.
Sensing Simon behind him, he turned and spoke,
“Looks like the car’s come off the railing, it’s
basically hanging there, we’ve got to secure it somehow.”
I’ve got a rescue unit on its way.” Simon said as he hung
up his cell phone.
Jim turned to nod at Simon before turning his attention back
to the elevator.
“Sandburg,” he called out. “Can you hear me?”
After a few minutes Blair’s surprised voice called back
“Jim?”
‘Oh thank God’ Jim sighed,
“Yeah Chief, it’s me! Are you ok? Who’s there with you?”
Below in the elevator, both Blair and Lucy had heard Jim’s voice, thinking at first they were hearing things. not willing to chance it
either, Blair had hesitantly called out to his partner.
Blair had never been so glad to hear his partner’s voice.
“Yeah, Jim I’m fine and Lucy’s fine also.” Blair
called back
“Just hang on, we’ll have you out soon.” Jim
replyed.
Blair and Lucy hugged each other at the news. unfortunately their sudden movement caused the elevator to move and they soon found themselves
sprawled back on the floor.
Blair recovered first, standing up he reached down to help Lucy up, stopping when he noticed she was gasping for breath.
Kneeling down carefully beside her, he asked, “Are you ok”
“No, I think the baby’s coming.”
“Baby! You’re pregnant?,” exclaimed Blair.
Lucy’s reply was cut off as another contraction overtook
her.
“Oh God.”
Suddenly Blair became aware of Jim’s worried voice calling
out to him.
“Ah Jim, we’ve got a little situation here.”
“Chief, what’s going on?”
“Lucy’s having a baby Right NOW!” An edge of panic
crept into Blair voice.
“Ok Chief, just calm down, do what you can for Lucy,
we’ll have you out as soon as we can”
“Hurry, OK?” Blair replied as he turned to help Lucy into
a more comfortable position.
Jim turned to Simon, who was standing behind him shaking his
head.
“Only Sandburg, ” Simon muttered as he dialed for the
paramedics. But he was stopped as
his cell started ringing. “Banks.
What? Well, how long will
they be? Oh, that’s just
great!” Simon said as he hung up the phone
“What’s going on Simon?”
Jim asked
“The Rescue crew is stuck in traffic, apparently there has
been an accident caused by the earthquake, it could be a few hours before they
get through.”
“A few hours, Simon, the elevator might not hold that
long.”
Blair was sitting behind Lucy, letting her lean back into him
so she was more comfortable.
The contractions were coming closer and closer together.
“Oh god.” Lucy screamed as the latest contraction took
hold.
“Breathe Lucy, in and out, that’s it” Blair coached.
When the contraction subsided, Lucy asked “What’s taking
so long, shouldn’t they have us out by now.
I Do NOT want to have this baby in an ELEVATOR” Lucy was starting to
get hysterical.
“Hey, it’s alright,” Blair brushed Lucy’s hair back
from her forehead. “I’m sure
they’re doing everything they can to get us out of here.”
Blair was starting to wonder himself what was going on, he didn’t like
the idea of Lucy having the baby in the elevator either.
Jim was pacing back and forth in front of the elevator.
He could hear Lucy and Blair below and knew the baby was going to come
soon, but that was the least of his worries.
He could also hear the elevator slowly slipping and knew if he didn’t
do something soon it was going to fall. Suddenly
an idea struck him, and he started toward the stair well.
“Jim, where are you going?” Simon shouted after him.
“To stop that elevator from falling.” Was all the explanation Simon got as Jim disappeared through
the door.
Jim headed towards the roof, where he knew a metal rope was,
he was sure it would be strong enough to hold the elevator.
At least long enough to be able to get them out.
Jim secured the rope to the metal frame work of the elevator
shaft and dropped the wire down. Now
as he headed back down the stairs, he wondered how he was going to attach it to
the elevator without upsetting the car and making it fall.
Jim
burst back in through the doors just at the same time as
the Rescue team did, closely followed by the Paramedics.
“About time” Jim thought as he rushed over to tell the
rescue team of his plan.
While the Paramedics prepared Blair to deliver his first
baby, Jim and the rescue crew headed towards the roof.
Blair couldn’t believe he was about to deliver a baby. The paramedics had talked him though everything and finally Lucy gave one last push and Blair’s strong steady hands safely caught the baby. Wrapping it in his jacket, Blair introduced mother to her new son.
Meanwhile up on the roof the rescuer crew was lowing Jim down
the elevator shaft, so he could attach a rope to the elevator. Lucy looked at her son and smiled, “Oh, he’s so
beautiful.” Then she looked up at
Blair “Thank you,” she whispered, suddenly too tired to stay upright, she
leaned back against him again. Blair
wrapped his arms around mother and son.
Both looked up as the trap door at the top of the elevator suddenly swung open and Jim’s face appeared.
“You guys ready to get out of there?”
Blair and Lucy looked down at the small bundle in Lucy’s
arms, then at each other. “Oh
yeah!” they said in unison.
