Scene Five

Nancy is sitting at her desk drinking coffee. She is going over something on her computer obviously researching, but we can't see what she's researching. KELLY HOLBROOKE enters. She is neat, but has a more casual feeling. She is Nancy's superior, but doesn't let it go to her head.

Kelly
Hey, Nancy.

Nancy
Kelly, hi. I don't think anything I'm doing is getting through to Madaleine, the more I try the more she just shuts me off.

Kelly
Well, Nancy, I hired you because of your research into dreams, not of how you reach people on the outside.

Nancy
Kelly, I am a psychiatrist, not a 'dream doctor'.

Kelly
Nancy, I really think the place to reach these kids is through their dreams, and I thought you could get it done.

Nancy
Kelly, I just can't handle dreams anymore. I don't want to be involved with that bullshit anymore. I just can't face him.

Kelly
Who?

Nancy
Freddy.

Kelly
Freddy, who the hell is Freddy, Nancy?

Nancy
Freddy is what drove me into my dream research. I was 15, my parents had just gotten the divorce, but I had a great best friend and wonderful boyfriend, so my life was going great, but then Freddy came, and believe me, he changed it. He had been a child murderer, until one night all the parents on Elm Street, the street we lived on, burned him, alive.

Kelly
Nancy, this is hard to do, but I think that it would be best for you, if you took a leave of absence.

Nancy[with disbelief]
Kelly, you're firing me?

Kelly
No, I'm not firing you, I just think you need some time off. I think you should go home. And not as in your apartment, as in Springwood.

Nancy(reluctantly)
Okay, I'll go then. I guess I could use a vacation.

Kelly leaves. Nancy goes back to her computer. We see now what she is researching. ON COMPUTER-Dream Demons-Legend has it these demons roam the dreams of the living, looking for the most twisted human imaginable. They then give him the power to make dreams reality. There is more text but we don't see it.

Nancy
This is crazy, I can't believe I still believe in Freddy.

She saves the file to disk anyway.

Nancy
I can't go back home. There's nobody left for me there.
