Scene Four

Nancy is now at work and she goes to check on a teenaged boy. She is working at an institution as a youth counselor. She loves her work.

Nancy
Hi, Jason.

Jason
Hi, Nancy.

Jason is about 16 years old and is wearing a baggy T-shirt and jeans. His hair is longish and unkempt.

Nancy
You have a visit with your grandmother today don't you?

Jason
Yeah, in an hour.

Nancy
Well, good luck.

She goes to check on a teenage girl but doesn't find her in her room. She stops an orderly.

Nancy
Where's Madeleine?

Orderly
She got thrown in the Quiet Room again. She was slashing her arms again

Nancy goes across the hall and looks in the Q.R. We see Madeleine, 17, sitting in the corner by herself. She is in a little ball looking at the ground with tears in her eyes. But she refuses to cry.

Nancy
How long has she been in there?

Orderly
Since last night.

Nancy goes and unlocks the door.

Nancy
Are you ready to come out?

Madeleine
[Nodding] Yes.

Nancy
So, I heard you were cutting again.

Madeleine
Yes

Nancy
May I ask why?

Madeleine
Because it helps me handle the pain

Nancy
How?

Madeleine
It just does, alright?

Nancy
Well, we can talk about this at your next therapy session, alright?

Madeleine
Yes

Nancy walks out of the room, leaving the door open for Madeliene
