Academic Overview

ACADEMIC LOAD
In order to meet increased graduation requirements, freshmen, sophomores,
and juniors should enroll in a minimum of 6 courses per year plus physical
education. Seniors not taking pyhsical education will take an additional
semester course.
GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS
The Winthrop Board of Education has established the following graduation
requirements:
Class of 1999 - 23 credits
Class of 2000 - 24 credits
Class of 2001 - 24 credits
Class of 2002 - 24 credits
To graduate, all students must have:
English - 4 credits
Fine Arts - 1 credit (art, drama, metal arts, music)
Health Education - 1/2 credit
Maine Studies - 1/2 credit
Mathematics - 3 credits
Physical Education - 1 credit
Science - 2 credits (including 1 lab science)
Social Studies - 2 credits
In addition, all students are required to do 60 hours of community
service (15 hours per year).
The state computer proficiency requirement is met by all students who have
attended Winthrop Middle School for grades 6-8. It can also be met at the
high school by successful completion of Keyboarding I, Accounting II,
Computer Programming, Web Site Construction, Computer Applications,
Drafting I, Algebra I part 1, Algebra I part 2, and Computer Information
Processing. Drafting and Graphic Arts programs at Capital Area Technical
Center also satisfy this requirement.
The Winthrop School Board recommends that all students take a total of
3 1/2 years of Social Studies.
GRADING SYSTEM
A+ = 97-100 B+ = 87-89 C+ = 77-79 D = 65-69
A = 93-96 B = 83-86 C = 73-76 F = 64/below
A- = 90-92 B- = 80-82 C- = 70-72
For compilation on rank-in-class, the following point system will be used:
A+ = 10 B+ = 7 C+ = 4 D = 1 F = 0
A = 9 B = 6 C = 3
A- = 8 B- = 5 C- = 2

8 - Advanced Placement (AP)
5 - Honors
4 - Standard College Prep
3 - Two Year College/Technical College
2 - Basic
