Women are everywhere in the media. However they are often abused or used as sex objects in the media. So let's look at what sexism and violence against women is...

What is sexism?

Sexism is when one sex, (usually females), is portrayed as weak, in need of pretection, or in unequal positions of authority or power - this message can be conveyed through women.

Signs of sexism include:

- wearing skimpy clothing while the males if there are any are fully dressed
- speaking and acting unintelligent
- being silly and only interested in superficial things

Other forms of sexism include:

- Females used as objects
- Women are employed in unequal roles, eg. doing the three "C" roles only (cooking, cleaning and caring)

We will be able to see these occuring in ads, books and articles.

What is abuse/violence against women?

Abuse against women is when the males can beat their wives or abuse any woman for not obeying to orders. Women who demonstrates they will accept the beating without a fight, is considered as violence against women.
