Cadeirin stands at 6’2 with a long mane of wild brown hair. His slender, but powerful build belies his grace and agility. He has piercing greenish-gray eyes under bushy eyebrows and almost unheard of shaggy side-burns. A wide dark green stripe is often painted on his face, covering his eyes like a mask. The ranger is usually dressed in his studded leather armor dyed a deep green and brown for camouflage in the forest. He wears his twin long-swords on his back and a long knife sheathed in his right soft leather boot. He carries a hip quiver full of arrows and a long bow across his back between his blades. When not tucked into his tunic, a carved wooden medallion of Mielikki can be seen worn about his neck. He appears to carry only what is needed and few luxuries.
Personality:
Cadeirin is quiet and observant, often listening rather than speaking. Most people he comes in contact with will think he is aloof, but in actuality he is shy and reserved. Cadeirin is a champion for his animal friends, he will stop or track down any who wantonly injure or kill them for sport. He has a slight dislike for humans and their uncaring ways, but will protect them if he deems they are just and in need. He has the respect of his clan, but few friends. He only counts the animals, his parents and the druid Corwen as his true friends. Kadeirin does not like to be confined nor in large groups of people as he has a small case of claustrophobia. He prefers to be in the open forest and out of the cities.
History:
Cadeirin was born into the Clan of the Silverleaf, in the middle of the High Forest many years ago. On that fateful day the clan rejoiced in his birth, now that after many, many moons the clans leading hunter and priestess had their first child. It was never said, but often thought that the couple may have been barren. Cadeirin was born strong and healthy as any of the other wild-elf children, but with a strange birthmark in the center of his chest. It was not unheard of having birthmarks, but few elves could remember those who had one. Not only was it strange that he was born with a birthmark, but also its shape. If looked at right and with a little imagination it could appear to be the head of a unicorn. Much was whispered about this and what it may mean if anything.
Time passed and nothing remarkable about the child was forthcoming, so it was forgotten and the clan went about its daily routine of living, until the babe, Cadeirin turned up missing. Jysille, his mother had just turned her back for a moment to gather more herbs when she realized he was not there. He could barely crawl and could not go far, so she searched the area but could find nothing. Her wail of anguish brought her husband Gaithryn and the rest of the clan. They immediately began searching for the babe, but not even Gaithryn or any of the other experienced trackers could find the trail of the child. Runners went through the forest seeking the child in a ever-widening circle, but came back deep into the night with no news. At first light they went searching again, but came back empty-handed.
That second night of the search Jysille the priestess of Mielikki, prayed once again to her goddess and asked for the safe return of her son. That night she fell into a deep sleep and dreamed. Upon waking she summoned her husband and the rest of the hunters and she bade them to travel the far distance to the Sacred Grove, that there they would find her son safe and unharmed. When the hunters argued that no small child could travel such a far distance, Jysille stopped them and told them of her dream. She explained that during the night Mielikki had come to her in a dream and told her where the child was and that he was safe. The hunters trusting their priestess immediately struck out towards the Sacred Grove.
They traveled quickly and many miles that by late afternoon they had reached the grove. Tentatively the men entered the grove, each one feeling the holiness of his surroundings. All of the men stopped as they walked down a hill into spotlighted sun. There in the base of the grove highlighted by a beam of sunlight could be seen the babe lying on his back gazing up unafraid at a huge white horse. The horse turned its head to appraise the newcomers, and then each man spied the long majestic horn sprouting from the horse’s head. The men stopped and stared as they realized they were watching a unicorn, the horse whinnied and through its long pure white mane about for the men to come forward. Finally Gaithryn felt his legs return and proceeded down the hill with the rest following. When the men came to the base and out from the trees they realized the unicorn was no longer there.
Gaithryn ran to his son and scooped him up into his arms. He and the rest inspected the child for any injury or harm. None could be found, Cadeirin was in perfect health, in fact he seemed even healthier than before his disappearance. The only change in the babe was his birthmark. Now, it did not look vaguely like a unicorn’s head, but exactly like one. There could be no doubt, Caderirin was now one of Mielikki’s chosen.
Cadeirin was taken back to the clan and raised in their ways. As he grew to adult-hood none could miss that he had a close affinity with the wildlife and that they in turn watched over him. He always was a loner and seemed to prefer the company of animals than that to others. Many times he was caught playing with dangerous beast and if the rumors are true he can talk to them and understand what the beast say.
Cadeirin was called to a Council of the Elders, all of the different wild-elf clans and elf-friends were in attendance. When he entered the Sacred Circle the council told him that an ancient evil had once again risen on Faerun, this evil being known as The Staff of the Dead. The council feared that the Staff of the Dead would cause havoc and prove a detriment to the wild-elves way of life. For this reason they placed a quest upon Cadeirin to find and destroy the artifact or bring information back to the council of its whereabouts.
