The powerful Artifact was created before time was even recorded in
Toril. The only accounts of its existence are kept VERY secret by the most learned
of sages and spoken of in rumor by those of age and story. The Staff was known to
have visited the Realms only once, just as the human races came and established
great Netheril. Powerful magic’s were known to reside within the bone it was carved
from. Many wicked and dark powers were granted to the foolish or false. The true
purpose of the Staff was merely to bring into being a world controlled by the
Undead, and thereby strengthening its power base of which it had command of.
None of the dwellers of Toril were able to control or even banish the Artifact. The
Gods themselves were not even able to locate the item, as it had a cloak from such
beings. Many from Netheril's Necro-guild tried to lay claim to its seductive call.
None ever were heard from again once claiming the Staff for their own. Not much is
known of the destruction it laid upon Toril, save for that the dead all across the
Realms rose up against the living. It is also rumored that Lathander himself was the
only being able to finally stop the reign of terror and banish this Artifact from Toril
forever........... That was before the Gods' War and Mystra's Weave was stable and
strong. Now it seems it has found a way back to the Realms and will repeat its Life
Purge, but with protection from Lathander's prying eyes and meddling hands. Only
Elminster and the other Chosen of Mystra, the High Priests of Lathander, and
Myrkul's Fallen had known of its existance and return but as with everything in the
Realms, nothing is secret for long. Many rush to find this item.... Red Wizards,
Myrkul's Fallen, Cyricists, Zhentarim, powerful Undead, and, it seems, everyother
evil of would-be power. There is also hope, as King Azoun himself along with the
Lords' Alliance, the Harpers, and several other goodly groups and personae are in
search of a way to banish it once again. However, there is other foul news that
comes with it. The Staff appears to have become sentient since its return and none
are sure how this could be. Perhaps there is a darker power lying in the shadows.
You start in Brukabar, a Dwarven stronghold of some renown as of late.
A huge evil army of Orcs, Goblins, Ogres, Trolls, Giants, and other foulness have
just been repelled on their march against the fortress. To offer help and a rumor of
the Staff being behind the attack is your reason for coming. A journal was found
indicating the Staff was indeed in the area and your help in this quest was called
upon by the King himself. What say you, Adventurer?!
