Something Old

Marie had flown up to Florida to help her daughter plan for the wedding. They wanted to be married as soon as possible.

While there, she spoiled her future son-in-law to death. The only other people who cared for him as she did was his mother and Rianna. He also enjoyed the fact that she spoke perfect English. The only reason so spoke Spanish is because she had lived in Puerto Rico for 29 years and taught English to high school students there. There, she met and married Vincenté Ramón. The rest is obvious.

Marie Ramón was unlike other mothers. She was very open and understanding. But at first, her openness was difficult to get used to.

Marie had made breakfast for her daughter and future son-in-law one morning. As she started on the coffee, Nick came down the stairs and sat down at the table. Rianna came down seconds later, hobbling a little as if her legs hurt.

“I know this is none of my business...but if you roll off of her when you’re finished, her legs won’t stay open so long, and she won’t walk like that in the morning.” Nick nearly choked on his bacon. Rianna doubled over laughing. Marie just sipped her coffee as if nothing out of the ordinary had been said.

“Please tell me that I didn’t just hear that.” Nick begged.

“Indeed I did.” She looked at Rianna. “Your father used to do that all of the time. After he, oh, what do you kids call it these days... cum? After he did that, he’d just lie in that same place all night long. And he wondered why my hips were so stiff in the morning.” Nick’s eyes were frozen open. Marie’s accent added to the comedy of the whole thing.

Nick couldn’t believe his ears. Was she really giving him sex advice? And how did she know he laid in place anyway? Anything could have caused Rianna’s stiffness. Right?

In another instance, Marie taught Rianna and Marcy how to move their hips just the right way to drive a man wild and make him putty in your hands. It must have worked, because AJ was in hot persuit of Marcy ever since.

Eventually Nick got used to her. Although he found himself telling his own mother things she didn’t wish to discuss with her son. Forgetting that Jane was nothing like Marie.

Marie was in the guest room going through her jewelry box when Rianna came in.

“Nick said you wanted to see me, Mamá.” She nodded and patted the space on the bed next to her.

“Come here hija. I want you to have something. I wore it to my wedding. Consider this something old.” Marie gave her a set of pearls with a cluster of diamonds as a pendant. Rianna felt tears burning in her eyes.

“Mamá, thank you so much.”
