Web Sites For Physicians
Professional Associations --- The following organizations are comprised primarily of physician members, although some may allow other health professionals to join. Content of the web sites varies widely. Some include only basic information about the association's mission while others also provide access to fact sheets, practice guidelines, and/or scholarly journal articles.
Information Resources for Physicians
- Agency for Health Care Policy and Research --- Evidence based medicine and practice guidelines
- AIDSInfo --- Treatment guidelines for adult and pediatric patients with HIV/AIDS that are sanctioned by U.S. government agencies.
- Cardiosource ---Professionally-oriented source on cardiology. Includes news and links to journal articles and clinical trial information.
- Centers for Disease Control and Prevention --- Site includes a wealth of information on infectious diseases (statistics, general fact sheets, etc). Also provides free full-text access to Mortality and Morbidity Weekly Reports
- ClinicalTrials.gov --- Sponsored by NIH, this site lists current clinical trials for a variety of conditions. Searchable by disease or sponsor. Also includes general information on clinical trial methodolgy for health consumers.
- Doctor's Guide --- Source for medial news and listings of CME opportunities. Also provides gateway to medical journals (some free full-text). Requires free registration.
- Health, United States, 2004 --- Health statistics
- Johns Hopkins Antibiotic Guide --- Updated information on specific antibiotics and their uses. Searchable by drug name, diagnosis, or pathogen. Requires free registration.
- Maryland Board of Physicians--- Licensing information
- Maryland Poison Center --- Web site of local poison control center. Includes emergency contact info by phone and TDD. Site also offers an interactive quiz, information about local poison education programs for professionals and laypeople, and fact sheets ("tox alerts") about common poisons.
- MEDLINE via PubMed,
- Medscape (requires free registration)
- Merck Medicus --- A gateway to many free, full-text resources, including Harrison's Online, Dorland's Medical Dictionary, and the Cecil Textbook of Medicine . Requires a free registration process that includes entering a valid professional license number.
- National Institutes of Health --- Gateway to the web sites of the various agencies that fall under the NIH umbrella, including the National Cancer Institute, the National Institute of Mental Health, and the National Institute on Drug Abuse.
- Oncolink --- A University of Pennsylvania site that provides cancer information to professionals and consumers. Many articles include bibliographies.
- Recalls.gov --- Site that consolidates recall information from various government agencies. Includes drug and medical device recalls as well as foods, cosmetics, motor vehicles, boats, environmental products, and consumer products.
- RxAssist --- Web site of program that identifies sources of low-cost pharmaceuticals for financially-needy patients. Designed for health professionals who are working on behalf of their patients.
- RX List:The Internet Drug Index
- Wheeless' Textbook of Orthopaedics --- Online orthopedics text that was first published c. 1996. Fully browsable and searchable. Many of the disease monographs include links to articles in the journal literature. Also includes anatomical atlas of bones, muscles, joints, and nerves and information about medications that are commonly used in orthopedics.
