The Southern Maryland Social Group includes gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered people in the Southern Maryland region. The group was established in September 1989 to provide opportunities for members of the GLBT community to enhance our lives through camaradarie and mutual support. The Southern Maryland region has changed and grown dramatically in recent years and the SMSG membership reflects the diversity of the people in Southern Maryland: Natives and newcomers; men and women; singles and couples; all ages and a wide range of professions.
The Southern Maryland Social Group meets monthly - usually on the second weekend of the month. Most meetings are potluck dinners at a member's home. Sometimes a short business meeting or a guest speaker is featured. Other SMSG events have included picnics, crab feasts, dances, parties, boatrides, campouts, and movie nights. These events provide opportunity to meet and socialize with other people like you in a safe and comfortable setting. SMSG has also participated in the DC Freedom Festival, the AIDS Walk and other Pride gatherings.
In addition to the monthly SMSG meetings, SMSG women gather on occasion for concerts, beach outings, crab feasts, Mom & Kid events, game night, movie night and other social events.
The SMSG monthly newsletter contains information on upcoming meetings and events, other group activities and news items of interest to the GLBT community. Members are invited to contribute short articles or information, which will be published on a space available basis. While some SMSG members are out, many are not. SMSG respects the privacy of its members and keeps the mailing list totally confidential. All mailings are in sealed envelopes without external SMSG identification.
