memory for the end of the world
if you should ever need me,
i’ll be the earthling
by the horizon, coaxing
the sun to come out
once more.
i’ll do my best to save
each and every last
one of us, from whose wrath
none can quite accurately
address,
and that harrowing faith
which was so sure to
yield something other than mere hope.
as each until my very last
ounce of spirit shall be
spent, if not wasted, striving
in vain to part the clouds
from where they gather over our soft heads,
as each until my very last
thought will be channeled into
making the water
rain instead of the
acid,
as each my every last
breath i will hold until
on the verge of suffocation,
to keep from
bleeding the atmosphere
dry of its sap,
i will be here for you,
if not only as a pretense
to make the future seem benevolent,
and even so,
to shelter you from its
hardship and catastrophe,
to clothe you in my
dream that someday
life will be different than when
i myself was a child.
