MAY 18th, 2006

The Nichols are taking a day off! We are all tired from touring and shopping and Sophia has been a little cranky, too. She is cutting her first tooth. I gave her a HOT bottle (Chinese babies drink incredibly hot formula) and she is sleeping now.

Anyway, I want to take advantage of sleepy time and add some additional information and pictures of Luo Tian village because it was an unforgettable experience. Conditions in the village leave a lot to be desired. I noticed a young woman washing shoes in brown water and clothes are done in the same water

Washing Shoes

The homes were small, dark, damp, and musty, and we could smell human waste. There was even a dead fish hanging in one room. The guide stated that the fish is cured so that it keeps for a while and can be eaten slowly. The living conditions were unbelievable, Americans are spoiled. I did manage to get a partial shot of the split bottom pants.

Split Bottom Pants (see grandfather holding boy)

These children are all bundled up except for butts. In another shot of several grandparents with boys, I would like to point out the gentleman because he gave Kelly a cigarette. Of course, he had no idea of knowing Kelly didn't smoke but it was a friendly and very generous gesture

More Friendly Grandparents

Kelly returned the gesture by giving the gentleman his Colorado ball cap. We can't say enough about the friendliness of these people. As our walk continued through the village, we passed a market....

....and a gentleman selling straw shoes.

Straw Shoes for Sale

Kelly purchased a pair of straw shoes and we prepared to leave the village. After a memorable visit we climbed back on the bus and left for a scenic ride back to the hotel.

Now, it's time to pack for Guangzhou and play with Sophia. I will send some pictures of our cutie tomorrow.
