Harry Potter Book 5:
Harry Potter and the Order of the Pheonix

About the Book

"I say to you all, once again in the light of Lord Voldemort's return, we are only as strong as we are united, as weak as we are divided. Lord Voldemort's gift for spreading discord and enmity is very great. We can fight it only by showing an equally strong bond of friendship and trust."
So spoke Albus Dumbledore at the end of Harry Potter's fourth year at Hogwarts. But as Harry enters his fifth year at wizard school, it seems those bonds have never been more sorely tested. Lord Voldemort's rise has opened a rift in the wizarding world between those who believe the truth about his return, and those who prefer to believe it's all madness and lies just more trouble from Harry Potter.

Add to this a host of other worries for Harry:

* A Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher with a personality like poisoned honey
* A venomous, disgruntled house-elf
* Ron as keeper of the Gryffindor Quidditch team
* And of course, what every student dreads: end-of-term Ordinary Wizarding Level exams and you'd know what Harry faces during the day. But at night it's even worse, because then he dreams of a single door in a silent corridor. And this door is somehow more terrifying than every other nightmare combined.

This is the richest installment yet of J. K. Rowling's seven-part story, Harry Potter confronts the unreliability of the government of the magical world, and the complete lack of power held by the authorities at Hogwarts. Despite this (or perhaps because of it) Harry finds depth and strength in his friends, beyond what even he knew; boundless loyalty and unbearable sacrifice. The plot is the thickest yet (and so is the spine with 870 pages), but it keeps you reading unlike any other Harry Potter book yet.

Summary

* The book starts out when two dementors come to Little Whinging and attack Harry and Dudley. Harry uses a Patronus Charm to stop them.
* However, Harry is not allowed to use magic outside of school and will have to go to a hearing to see if he will be expelled or not.
* Harry then discovers that Mrs. Figg, his neighbor, is a Squib and has been keeping an eye out for him.
* That night, The "Advance Guard" comes to get Harry. They fly on broomsticks to Number 12, Grimmauld Place.
* This is the secret headquarters of the Order of the Phoenix. There, Harry finds Ron, Hermione, Sirius, the rest of the Weasleys, and many other people in the order.
* There is also a mean, disrespectful house-elf named Kreacher. Only Hermione treats him well.
* Then Harry and Mr. Weasley go to the hearing. Dumbledore acts as Harry's "prosecution attorney" and Mrs. Figg provides a witness story. Dumbledore gets Harry off, but never looks or talks to him.
* Back at Grimmauld Place, Harry, Ron, and Hermione get their letters from Hogwarts. Ron and Hermione are the Gryffindor prefects.
* Harry finds out that Mr. Weasley and Percy had a row about allying with Dumbledore and that they aren't speaking anymore.
* On the Hogwarts Express, Harry meets a girl named Luna Lovegood whose Dad owns The Quibbler- a tabloid type of magazine.
* During the Sorting Ceremony, The Sorting Hat's song is a warning that everyone must unite and that sorting people into different houses seperates people.
* The new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher is from the Ministry and denies that Voldemort has returned. Her name is Professor Umbridge. She only teaches the basics and does not allow them to do any spells, hexes, curses, jinxes, charms, etc.
* When she says that Cedric's death was an accident, Harry contradicts her a gets detention for a week. During these detentions, Harry has to write "I will not tell lies" over and over again with a special quill. This quill makes the writing cut into his hand instead of writing on the paper. Every night after detention, Harry's hand was bleeding.
* The next week, Percy sends Ron a letter saying to avoid Harry because he is bad company and if Ron continues to be his friend, he might lose his prefect badge.
* Also, Harry talks to Sirius through the Gryffindor fireplace. Professor Umbridge becomes a High Inquisitor for Hogwarts- she has the power to fire any teacher.
* Hermione convinces Harry to start teaching Defense Against the Dark Arts to students. But their first meeting is overheard and Umbridge passes a decree saying that all groups, clubs, etc. are banned.
* But this won't stop Harry. From Dobby's tip, Harry finds a secret room called the Room of Requirement where they hold Defense lessons. They call their group the D.A.- Dumbledore's Army.
* After a Quidditch match versus Slytherin, Malfoy intimidates Harry and Fred and they beat him up. Umbridge gives them a lifetime ban from Quidditch.
* Hagrid comes back to Hogwarts and tells Harry, Ron, and Hermione about his trip to the giants. It was not a successful trip and the giants that they made friends with got killed.
* Ron becomes Gryffindor's new Keeper.
* A few days later, while Harry is sleeping, he dreams that he is a snake that attacks someone. Harry then wakes up and tells Ron that his dad is hurt badly.
* The group goes to St. Mungo's Hospital where Mr. Weasley is. There, they also find Professor Lockhart, who still has almost no memory.
* While Dumbledore still never looks at Harry or really talks to him, he tells him to take Occlumency lessons with Snape. The point of Occlumnecy is to stop Voldemort from being able to enter Harry's mind. But, Harry doesn't practice and doesn't get any better.
* Hermione gets Rita Skeeter to write a truthful article about what really happened when Voldemort came back and it gets published it The Quibbler. Soon, everyone has read the article.
* Umbridge sacks Trelawney in hopes to get another Ministry teacher, but Dumbledore is a step ahead of her. He has gotten
* Firenze, the centaur, to take over the job. Marietta Edgecombe, a member of the D.A., tells Umbridge about it.
* Although Umbridge does not catch the meeting in aciton, she takes Harry to Dumbledore's office.
* Lucky for Harry, Kingsley Shacklebolt altered her memory so that she thinks that the D.A. never existed. Fudge finds the sheet of paper that says "Dumbledore's Army" on it and accuses Dumbledore of trying to overthrow him.
* Dumbledore then hexes Fudge, Umbridge, and some other people. He tells Harry to practice Occlumency and then vanishes.
* During an Occlumency lesson when Snape is gone, Harry looks into the Pensieve. He sees his father torturing Snape for fun and Lily saying that he is "an arrogant, bullying, toe rag."
* Snape finds him looking into the Pensieve and stops giving Harry Occlumency lessons.
* During a Quidditch match, Hagrid takes Harry and Hermione into the Forbidden Forest and shows them a giant named Grawp. He asks them to take care of him if he gets sacked and to continue teaching him English.
* During O.W.L.S., Harry sees Umbridge and her helpers take Hagrid and stun Professor McGonagall.
* When Harry dozes off, he sees Voldemort torturing Sirius. Harry uses Umbridge's fire to see if Sirius is at Grimmauld Place. Kreacher tells Harry that Sirius will not come back from the Department of Mysteries.
* Harry, Ron, Hermione, Neville, Luna, and Ginny all go to the Department of Ministries on thestals.
* Harry and the others go find the "prophecy". Right when Harry picks it up, Death Eaters appear and demand the prophecy. Harry does not give it to them but flees.
* After battling them, Sirius, Lupin, Dumbledore, Tonks, and others arrive. During all the noise and confusion, the prophecy breaks and no one hears what it said.
* Meanwhile, Sirius is battling with Bellatrix Lestrange. She hits him with a Stunner and he falls through the veil. He is dead. Lestrange flees. In his anger, Harry races after her and attempts the Cruciatus Curse, but it has no effect.
* Voldemort comes and tries to use the Killing Curse on Harry, but Dumbledore comes at the same time and the curse does not work. Voldemort flees, but not before Fudge and other Ministry officials see him.
* Back in Dumbledore's office, Dumbledore explains to Harry that Voldemort only made him think that Sirius was being tortured, that Kreacher lied, and he showed him what the prophecy said.
* The Daily Prophet then writes an article about Voldemort's return to power.

Excerpts

"REMEMBER MY LAST, PETUNIA."
--Dumbledore

"Are you mad, Mad-Eye?"
--Tonks

"His life's ambition is to have his head cut off and stuck up on a plaque like his mother. Is that normal, Hermione?"
--Ron

"Let's make it stand for Dumbledore's Army."
--Ginny

"Teach? Me? Did I?"
--Lockhart

"You know, Minister, I disagree with Dumbledore on many counts...but you cannot deny he's got style..."
--Phineas Nigellus

"Special discounts to Hogwarts students who swear they're going to use our products to get rid of this old bat."
--George

"Come on, you can do better than that!"
--Sirius to Bellatrix Lestrange

Rather pink in the face, she closed the door and departed. Harry slumped back in his seat and groaned. He would have liked Cho to discover him sitting with a group of very cool people laughing their heads off at a joke he had just told; he would not have chosen to be sitting with Neville and Loony Lovegood, clutching a toad and dripping in Stinksap.
--Chapter Ten: Luna Lovegood

The treetops of the Forbidden Forest swayed in a light breeze. Harry watched them, savouring the fresh air on his face, thinking about Quidditch later ... then he saw it. A great, reptilian winged hcrse, just like the ones pulling the Hogwarts carriages, with leahery black wings spread wide like a pterodactyl's, rose up out of the trees like a grotesque, giant bird. It soared in a great circle, then plunged back into the trees. The whole thing had happened so quickly, Harry could hardly believe what he had seen, except that his heart was hammering madly.
--Chapter Fourteen: Percy and Padfoot

Then you will find yourself easy prey for the Dark Lord!' said Snape savagely. 'Fools who wear their hearts proudly on their sleeves, who cannot control their emotions, who wallow in sad memories and allow themselves to be provoked so easily ? weak people, in other words ? they stand no chance against his powers! He will penetrate your mind with absurd ease, Potter!'
--Chapter Twenty-Four: Occlumency

Mistakes

Before the first Quidditch match, Harry is relieved that it's cloudy as he won't have the sun in his eyes, but moments later the stadium is in "dazzling sunlight".

Second-year student Dennis Creevey goes to the Hog's Head for the first DA "meeting", but only third-years and older are allowed to go to Hogsmeade during term time.

On page 710 it says that Parvati and Lavender were practicing basic locomotion charms making their pencil cases race each other. They use scrolls and quills, what would they be doing with pencil cases?

Picture Mistake - When Fred and George leave Hogwarts on their brooms, it says that they took off in a glorious sunset but in the chapter picture it shows them fleeing into the night sky amoung the moon and stars.

At the very beginning, Harry is listening to the seven o' clock news and bumps his head after hearing a loud bang. Later, when Dudley hits him over the head, it says 'Harry's head seared with pain for the second time in an hour.' Shortly after, he cast the Patronus charm. When he gets the letter, it says '... that you performed the Patronus charm at twenty-three minutes past nine...'. Technically, he hit his head for the second time between seven and eight. Unless he cast the charm an hour or more after, he could not have done it at the time indicated on the letter.

In the Care of Magical Creatures lesson where Hagrid showed the class Thestrals, he mentioned the only people who could see them were people who had seen death. Harry had only began to see them this year because Cedric died - but Harry had also seen his mother die from Voldemort.

On page 225 it says: "Look at today!" groaned Ron. "History of Magic, double Potions, Divination, and double Defence Against the Dark Arts". A class is originally 45 minutes long which makes a double class an hour and a half, but on page 229, while in History of Magic class (which should be just 45 min. long) it says: Today they suffered an hour and a half's droning on the subject of giant wars. Harry heard enough within the first ten minutes to appreciate dimly that in another's teachers hands this subject might have been mildly interesting, but then his brain disengaged, and he spent the remaining hour and twenty minutes playing...

In book 5, when Ron and Hermione become prefects, they tell Malfoy prefects can't take away house points from students, but in book 2, Percy Weasley takes points away from Ron for being in a girl's bathroom.

On page 626, when Malfoy starts to dock points, he takes 5 from Hermione, 5 from Ernie, 5 from Harry, 5 from Ron and another 10 from Hermione, giving a grand total of 30 points. Though, in the last sentence of the page, Harry says "Malfoy just docked us all about fifty points."
