One of the greatest goal scorers to wear the old gold and black strip of Wolverhampton Wanderers, Dennis Westcott joined New Brighton during the 1932/33 season before switching to Molineux in February 1937. In that time, he had won Schoolboy International honours and had an unsuccessful trial with West Ham Utd. He made his debut for Wolves in a FA Cup 5th round tie against Grimsby Town, scoring one of the goals in a 6-2 victory. His league debut followed 3 days later at Manchester City and in only his 4th league appearance he scored both goals in a 2-1 victory over Stoke City. In 1937/38 he was Wolves leading scorer with 22 goals in 28 games including 4 goals against Leicester City in a 10-1 victory for the club and a hat-trick against Swansea Town in a 4-0 FA Cup win. In 1938/39, Westcott netted a remarkable 43 goals in 43 league and cup appearances and won an FA Cup final runners-up medal after Wolves had been beaten 4-1 by Portsmouth in the Wembley final. He netted 3 hat-tricks in the league against Chelsea (home 3-1), Grimsby (5-0) and Brentford (home 5-2) and then scored another 4 goals against Grimsby in the FA Cup semi-final at Old Trafford, as the mariners were again beaten 5-0.

During the hostilities, Westcott scored 91 goals in 76 games including 10 hat-tricks, 5 of which came in the 1939/40 season. He played in the wartime League Cup match against Sunderland in 1942 and scored 3 of Wolves goals in their 6-3 aggregate win over the Wearsiders. he was very unlucky not to win full International honours for England, though he did play in 4 Victory Internationals and represented the Football League. In 1946/47 he established another club record of 38 league goals in a season, a total which included him scoring 4 goals in successive games against Liverpool (away 5-1) and Bolton (home 5-0). He scored 124 goals in 144 League and Cup games (a total of 215 goals in 220 if you include the war years) before he left Molineux to join Blackburn Rovers. After scoring 37 goals in 63 league games for the Ewood Park Club, he signed for Manchester City where he netted 37 goals in 72 games before ending his career with Chesterfield. After that he had a short spell playing non-league football with Stafford Rangers until he died suddenly at the age of 43 in 1960, the victim of Leukemia.
