Full Name: Richard Dorsett Born: Brownhills, Staffs, 3rd December 1919 Nickname: The 'Brownhills Bomber'
As a young lad Dicky Dorsett represented
Walsall & District Boys and the Birmingham County FA before joining
the Wolves groundstaff in April 1935, turning professional shortly before
Christmas of the following year. He was still a teenager when he made his
debut in a 4-1 defeat at Charlton Athletic on the 26th March 1938. Three
weeks later he scored 4 goals when Wolves demolished Leicester City 10-1,
he scored 4 goals again on the 22nd February 1939 as Everton were beaten
7-0 at Molineux in front of 39,734 spectators. At the end of that season,
he scored Wolves goal in their 4-1 defeat by Portsmouth in the 1939 FA Cup
final. During the war he served in the RAF and guested for Liverpool,
Grimsby Town, Brentford, QPR and Southampton. He was a member of the
Wolves side that beat Sunderland in the 1942 Wartime League Cup final but
left Molineux in 1946 to join Aston Villa. During the war, he scored 42
goals in 61 games including 4 in a 5-5 draw against Walsall and 35 in 52
League and Cup games. Dicky was a powerful, all-action forward but after
he had moved to Villa Park in 1946 he became a strong tackling left-half
and/or left-back. His career almost came to a premature end in January
1950 when he was involved in a car crash, but he recovered and went on to
serve Villa for another 3 years. After retiring from the playing side of
the game at the end of the 1952/53 season, he stayed at Villa Park to
coach the club's youth team. In the summer of 1957 he was appointed
Liverpool's assistant-trainer but 5 years later returned to the Midlands
to take over the running of a junior side. Dicky is the nephew of the
former Manchester City and WBA brothers George and Joe Dorsett.
