She's beautiful in every way. She's perfect from her pink, freckled nose to her tiny wiggly toes. And don't think I'm not appreciative, because I am. But there were two. I see her now and I'm sure of it.
There's something missing in the way she plays, talks. She makes gibberish to shadows and spends her nights giggling to the stars. There's supposed to be someone else there with her. The emptiness is clear.
Sometime I'll sneak up to the nursery door and listen and I can swear to you I hear two little voices speaking that special twin talk I've never understood, but when I go in, there's no one there and she's sad again. There's something missing and I swear there were two.
Oh, I want to, but I'll never ask. My answer is only in this picture I have. Jack and two pink-bundled infants on a familiar infirmary bed. They're all asleep. I mentally count the little fingers and count the little toes in my head. Now, I finally say aloud what my heart has already known.
I was right, there were two. So where is my other daughter? And why isn't she with me. Why isn't she with us? Where is she?
