Pictured above is the Classic logic board with the memory expansion card extending vertically. Directly at the base of this card, you will see eight memory chips attached to the logic board. These chips provide the 1 MB of RAM that come standard with the Classic.
The memory expansion card can be added to upgrade the Classic's RAM to either 2 MB or 4 MB. The expansion card itself has 1 MB soldered onto it. This expansion card can be added, bringing the total RAM in the Classic to 2 MB
A Classic with either 1 MB or 2 MB of RAM must run System 6. Four MB or RAM are required to run System 7.
The memory expansion card can also accommodate two 1 MB SIMMS. When these are installed, as shown above, the Classic can be expanded to its maximum of 4 MB. A small jumper is present on the expansion card which must be set when the additional 2 SIMMs are added. The Classic will not address more than 4 MB with the expansion card added.
