THE CLASSIC MACINTOSH COMMUNITY

An active and vibrant community exists around the world, dedicated to the preservation of early computers and software. A subset of this group focuses on the classic, or compact, Macintosh computers -- the all-in-one computers running on the Motorola 680X0 microprocessor. Members of this community stay in touch by way of email lists, bullentin boards, and official user groups. Below you will find links on how to participate in this community, links to help solve a number of technical problems, and links of members who have put up webpages devoted to their love of old computers, like this one.

INTERACTIVE SITES

Mac 512 Text Only Link

Although The Mac 512 User Group has ended, it still maintains a website full of helpful information as well as a bullentin board on which to post questions and help other users. Everyone I have met here has been helpful and kind.

To check out the Mac 512 Bulletin Board, go here:

MacDebate.com

Low End Mac is one of the largest of the online communities. It maintains extremely active mailing lists, divided according to computer types. Lists cover everything from the Apple Lisa up to the most current G4s. The list for most of the computers discussed on this site is the compact.macs list. Note that you will find some very friendly and helpful people here. You will also find the occassional flame war. The lists are not moderated, so you will need a thick skin at times to participate.
To join the Compact Macs mailing list, send a blank email to:

As the result of a discussion on the Compact Macs mailing list, a petition has been started to make old versions of unsupported software free. This petition was mentioned on TechTV's "The Screen Savers" on May 27, 2000.
