The Doors second album, Strange Days was released only ten months after their debut, both in 1967. The whole album has a strange grayish-blue aura and a creepy feel. Each song will give you shivers, except for maybe Moonlight Drive, but at the end you can hear "C'mon baby, gonna take a little ride, Goin down by the ocean side. Gonna get real close, get real tight... Baby's gonna drown tonight! Goin down, down, down..." Geez, the song seemed so mellow. So I guess that makes the whole album 100% creepy. Keep in mind through my other reviews that this album was praised by critics. Let's look at some of the names on the album. Strange Days, People are Strange, You're Lost Little Girl, Unhappy Girl, you get the overall vibe. But the coolest and strangest song on the whole album is Horse Lattitudes. It's 1 minute 30 seconds (actually not very short compared to the other songs), and it's pure creepy poetry. "When the still sea conspires an armor, and it's sullen and aborted currents breed tiny monsters, true sailing is dead. Awkward instant, and the first animal is jettisoned! Legs furiously pumping, their stiff green gallop, and heads bob up. Poise, delicate, pause, consent! In mute nostril agony, carefully refined... and sealed over!" He doesn't sing it, and there's no real music behind, just people getting whipped, horses galloping, and fading organ music and chains. It's the true soul of Morrison, what he feels natural doing. I really recommend this album to anyone who truly appreciates music, or even Matt! I give this album five full handclaps, the highest rating, and this is only my second favorite doors album!
Strange Days
Creepy lyrics, creepy music, what a way to start a creepy album out! Quickly becomes a fan favorite, don't I know. Great stuff.
You're Lost Little Girl
Again with the creepiness and whatnot! Okay, I'm just going to say each following song is creepy, unless otherwise mentioned or exceptionally creepy. This song has simple easyflowing lyrics that you will know before you know it.
Love Me Two Times
Not really too creepy, but oddly fits into place. Based on a simple E chord, but so much is done to the fingering for a cool melody. On the greatest hits, so that says something...
Unhappy Girl
Only two minutes long, as is basically the rest of the album (except the 11 minute When the Music's Over). Fits the aura with You're Lost Little Girl, just two songs ago.
Horse Lattitudes
Exceptionally creepy! I've basically already covered this song, look back to the main paragraph.
Moonlight Drive
Hey, this song doesn't sound all that creepy, upbeat, yet mellow, catchy melodies, and... what? Baby's gonna drown tonight? I'm not letting my child listen to this crap! (Note: NOT FROM MY POINT OF VIEW!)
People Are Strange
Oh look, it's everybody's favorite Doors song. Everybody think's they're being original by liking the weirdest song on the Greatest Hits, but it's not really original if it's everybody's favorite.
My Eyes Have Seen You
I've said that Stone Temple Pilots sounds like the Doors on their cover of Break on Through, but in this song, The Doors actually sound more like STP! Now, I'm pretty sure they didn't intend to sound like a 90's rock band, but this song sounds like it could be off of Tiny Music...Songs From The Vatican Gift Shop, STP's third album.
I Can't See Your Face In My Mind
Sounds a lot like I Looked At You from The Doors, but as I said, that song would probably fit well on this album.
When The Music's Over
11 minutes long. You think he's about to sing, but he doesn't, but then he sings when you don't think he will. Overall a cool song, but it's not really creepy. Most people probably see 11 minutes and think "oh look, The End 2". But no, nothing like it. It's more big than the End, pardon my lack of English. But like the End, it's a good way to finish off the album.
This is Kal from the Matt-O-Mac page, talking about albums I find interesting.
