Explanation
After the government formed by European settlers handed over
to the majority population a state of considerable uncertainty
arises. However, since the handover things seem to have improved.
The low level civil war going on in Natal between Inkatha supporters
and the ANC has reduced but crime has not. Inkatha were trying
to achieve a Zulu state - the re-creation of Shaka's empire.
This would have amounted to secession.
Allegations that some of the former security forces, now acting
as extreme right racist groups,
have nuclear weapons are hard to assess. None of these conflicts
seem likely since non-racial elections occurred. In particular
Zululand does not now seem likely to secede. War inside South
Africa seems unlikely and there are no external enemies. Chinese
influence is of a different nature.
