BalkanWars

This is an area in which actual wars broke out, on the fall of communism when the federation of Yugoslavia broke up. Nationalism, between Croats and Serbs had been suppressed during the rule of Tito, in favour of the slogan of his period: "Brotherhood and Unity". It broke out soon after he died.

In Moldova there is stand-off between the would-be secessionists of Transdniestria and the Moldovan Republic, probably assisted by the Russian government's covert policy of re-assembling the Soviet Union.

Now that Slovenia, Romania and Bulgaria have joined the European Union the danger of war may have receded. The remaining tensions are suppressed by the presence of Peacekeeping forces from the EU, NATO and the UN in Kosovo and Bosnia, and the removal of Milosevic from Serbia.
