Explanation

Since independence there has been a one-party state ruled by the FLN (National Liberation Front) which was the political organization which supervised the war against France. This claimed to be evolving towards multi-party democracy during 1991. But the winners of elections then were the FIS (Militant Muslims). These openly claimed to wish to abolish democracy when they came to power. The military then took power to prevent the formation of an Islamic Republic. A nasty guerrilla war is the result. Foreign travelers and workers are at risk.

The military government was probably supported by France and other western powers.

Following elections for president and assembly this war may have ended.

The real cause of the war may well have been the differences between the French-educated and -speaking government and the mass of the people speaking Arabic and Berber languages.
