French overseas territory (colony)

Columbus visited in 1502. It was inhabited by Caribs at that time. It has been a French colony since 1635. From 1762-3 British occupied it and also during Napoleonic wars.

Famous for destruction of the town of St Pierre when the volcano Mont Pelee exploded in 1902 and killed 30,000 people with a pyroclastic flow.

There is an independence movement but the French intend the island to remain a colony.
