First seen by the Spanish navigator Juan Bermudez between 1503-11. It was given to the Virginia company by the English king James the first in 1612. In 1797, following the American revolution, it was separated from Virginia as a British colony. Tourism is the main source of income. As it is near the United States it is heavily influenced by the US, and the tourists' money. The currency is linked to the US Dollar. If it became independent it would presumably come under US influence.

Islanders were awarded full British citizenship in 21 May 2002. However, British citizens do not have the right to move there.
