History

A former British colony (British Honduras).

This was part of the area occupied by the ancient Mayan civilization. The British settled there from the 17th century though opposed unsuccessfully by Spain. The last Spanish attack was in 1798. In 1862 it became a Crown colony. Guatemala claimed the territory after its own independence in 1820 but in 1859 signed a treaty to recognize Belize's separation. Subsequent governments have repudiated the treaty.

It became independent in 1981 but still has a military alliance with Britain and British troops are usually posted there for training and deterrence. Unlike its neighbors it retains a democratic system, perhaps because it is not dominated by a neo-feudal landowning class (though the role of Lord Ashcroft is of interest.)

The British government proposed in May 1993 to remove British troops (defense cuts). It can be wondered whether Guatemala at some time will invade.
