Appendix 1
Work Sheets
Working documents used in the English Block at Kakamega
Each student had a Personal File with a metal clip in which
to keep the working documents and his collection of writing done
during the term.
The Secretary had a Minute Book which was the record of the group
work. It had two purposes: the first was to be a record which
the teacher in charge - the Group Tutor - could use to keep an
eye on the group; the second was to be a continuing lesson in
being systematic and orderly, and keeping businesslike records.
What follows is a selection of the documents. These, like the
rules of a team game, were intended to be short. Students were
asked to do a lot of work. Most of it was to be done themselves.
Not a lot of time was to be spent on these documents. However
they themselves are part of the communicative environment - they
are intended to communicate and they provide examples of a certain
genre. Any questions about what to do can be referred to them.
They embody in them the principle that a writen document can
be understood even if not every single word is known. That is,
the language level is perhaps slightly more advanced than the
students could be expected to know.
The documents were originally typed on foolscap stensils and
printed on a duplicating machine, the most advanced technology
available at the time.
Terminology
Tutor - used to change the students' perception about
the role of the teacher.
Diary - Not so much a personal book of pensées
but a record of work done.
Group Minute Book - An exercise book containing a record
of the group's activities.
