Presentation and Composition(How to Make the Bastard Child Pretty)

The presentation of hypertext is as varied as the imagination of the author. Standard codex-based formats are acceptable within the frameset of hypertext documentation. However, one may reject the codex altogether and place whatever, wherever one wishes. Moutlthrop, that magnificent bastard, took this to heart when constructing his essay, "The Shadow of an Informand: An Experiment in Hypertext Rhetoric."

One is also not limited to words. "In speculating about what forms the traditional academic essay may take, we cannot ignore the implications for writing of the incorporation into hypertext webs of graphics and other multimedia dimensions" (Snyder 113). Movies, completely foreign inside the pages of the traditional codex, can be imbedded within text to help argumentation. Moving, interactive graphics may also aid presentation.

There are many things a publisher of hypertext must keep in mind. While presentation is limited by your imagination, the audience is limited by bandwidth. Excessive use of slow loading movies and graphics can drag attention to a crawl. Overly flashy documents also tend to be ignored. A simple, yet attractive, framework cannot be downplayed in hypertext presentation. Simple toolbars, pleasing colors, and small text boxes can be everything in a website.
