This effect was inspired by a marketed effect called "Cardiographics". The effect is basically the same, but because it's performed on the back of a selected (And signed) playing card. It seems like an impromptu effect.
EFFECT:
Two cards are selected by two spectators. One of these are hel by a specatator, while the other is signed on it's face. The signed selection is placed on top of the deck face down. The performer announces that he's going to try to read the spectators mind and draw a picture of the other selection on the back of the signed selection. When the drawing is finished, it's shown to the audiance. The acknowledges that it is not the correct card. To cover this mistake, the performer brings their attention to the drawing on the back of the signed selection. Slowly, the drawing begins to animate and the correct card is seen to rise out of the picture. It appears as if the drawing is a deck of cards and their selection is rising out of that deck. When the animation is finished, The card is handed out for examination. The face of the card still bares their signature. watch as the run their fingers across the drawing. All they'll find is a drawing made with a marker. What makes this effect so strong is the realistic look of the animation. While the animation is happening, no part of the printed back design moves as the card rises up. It looks just like cartoon happening. I cannot stress how realistic this animation looks. (Drag your mouse over the picture of the card above to get an idea. Of course, in performance the card rises out slowly). Since I came up with this effect, I've discovered that there is another animated card rise on the back of a playing card on the market. While the other version handles fairly well, the animation on that version just doesn't compare to that of VCR. This effect comes with the VCR gimmick and another commonly known gimmick card. These make this effect very easy to perform. Includes detailed instruction for variations of handlings and presentations. When performing with an ordinary deck, you only have two cards to add or take away. So it can be done at any time during a performance. I'm sure you'll have a lot of fun with this eye popping effect. Check back soon for a video demonstration of this and other effects found on this site. |

This effect was published in Channel one Magic Magazine and will be published in Mike Powers up coming book "MOJO" under the title SMOKIN'. In the published version of this effect, you had to construct your own gimmick. With "OUTSMOKEN'", all the work is done for you. So you'll be able to perform this great comedy routine in minutes. Effect: The performer places a cigarette into his mouth. As he brings a lighter up toward the cigarette to light it, he notices it's backwards (The wrong end is between his lips). He embarrassingly flips the cigarette end for end then puts it back into his mouth. To the surprise of the audience the cigarette is still backwards. He once again flips the cigarette and it's still backwards. The cigarette is then held at chest level with the filter facing his mouth. As it's brought up to the mouth, the filter VISIBLY jumps to the other end of the cigarette. This is repeated as he searches his mind for a solution. Out of frustration, the performer tears the filter off the cigarette and pockets it. When the cigarette is placed back into the mouth, the filter reappears back on the wrong. One last attempt is made and the filter is seen to be in the center of the cigarette. This unusual cigarette with the filter in the middle is tossed on to the table to be examined. This is a very funny routine when performed correctly. It's one of those rare moments in which the magic seems to happen to the performer rather them by him/her. It's best when presented as an impromptu effect. It's also a great routine to bridge one routine to the next. Nonsmokers will appreciate that the cigarette is never lit. In fact, you can present this effect as a comical method to quit smoking. Thus ending with a line such as "I don't smoke anyway". Included are methods of performing with your own cigarette or with a barrowed. The strength of the ending is that they are left with a totally altered cigarette that they can keep if they desire. It's never failed to get giggles and gasps. I'm sure you'll have fun with OUTSMOKIN'. Since it's original release, many alternate handling and presentations have been devised and are now included in the instructions that come with the gimmick. This is a great effect for smokers or non-Smokers. In fact, it's a great routine when done with an anti-smoking message. You'll also find this a great way to fill in the gaps of a performance as you switch from one kind of routine to another. As Mike Powers put it in his book, " When I first saw Ron perform this at Abbotts Magic get together, my eyes almost popped out. I am not a smoker, but i do carry this item and perform it. Trust me guys, if you see someone doing this routine, you'll want to be doing it too". |
