Jazz as we think of it today - syncopated music featuring adlib solos - is less than a century old. Ragtime, syncopated piano music, came first...in the late 1800s. After 1900, New Orleans bands developed a jazzy style...but with few solos and almost nothing off-the-cuff. By 1916, Daily Variety was reporting that jazz bands were the hot new trend
in Vaudeville.

If you are irenic, then you prefer peace, or you are a peacemaker. Example: "After months of bitter labor disputes, the compromise proposal was an unexpectedly irenic gesture from management." According to Greek mythology the seasons, the hours, and the order of nature were supervised by the Horae, the daughters of Zeus and Themis and the guardians of the gates of heaven. Among them was Eirene, the goddess of peace, whose name means peace. Eirene was the nurse of Demeter, the goddess of fertility. Eirene's name gave us irenic as well as irenics [n. eye-REN-iks], a term for the advocacy of unity among Christians. Also from Eirene is the modern name Irene, and a genus of Asian bluebirds named Irena. From Eirene's Latin name of Pax we have peace, pacify, pacific, and appease.
Popularity Debate
There is an enormous popularity debate happening on Journal – L, a mailing list I’m on. It has to do with long-time online journalists and whether or not they’re obliged to answer e-mail sent by their readers. This is stemming from an earlier posting about "hit sluts"; people who keep online journals and obsess over how many people visit their sites every day. Some of them feel as if they get so much mail that it would be impossible to answer the people who write to them.
Now, I get a ton of e-mail, but only because I’m a list junkie and have multiple subscriptions to rubber stamping lists, journaling lists, paper arts lists, barbershop music lists, Broadway music lists, children’s literature lists….I may be forgetting a few. But the first I thing I do is go through all the mail to pick out the notes that don’t have a tag in front of the title, as that means it’s personal. Personal makes me happy. I LIKE hearing from people who are writing to me personally and not posting to a list in general.
I’m a bit too new at this to get hotly involved, but I will admit to being thrilled if I hear from someone who is visiting regularly (Hi Tree! Hi Mari!), and I do check to see if there have been any visits during the day. I don’t think this qualifies me as a ‘Hit slut" though. Maybe if I had a readership the size of some of these other journalers (Kymm for instance) I’d be more wrapped up in it.
What fascinates me more is checking the map to see where the people who are reading this hail from. I’ve had visitors from the Russian Federated time zone, the Japan time zone, and the map shows visitors from either Europe or Africa. I think this is so cool. It thrills me to think that someone on the other side of the earth, living in a different culture and experiencing a life so different from the one I live is reading what I have to say.
And people wonder why I love the Internet!
It has put me in touch with people I would never have met in my daily life, and has enriched my world.
So, unless I become world famous (as my numerology reading promises), I’ll be answering my e-mail.

I’m loving the part about benefactors being drawn to me, as well as all the stuff about creative pursuits, travel and communication. It’s funny that the new self-image is mentioned, as that’s all part of this dieting business. (Sidebar: This morning I put on a skirt and blouse that I’d bought this summer and they were both quite roomy…Yeah!) I still am working on a new career and am searching for opportunities to move on, so I’d like to believe that there’s at least a scintilla of truth in this.
I need to get to rehearsal, moan and groan…
