Trivia:Why is gold made in the shape of bricks?

The shape of gold is really more a practical than aesthetic concern. Vaults are expensive to construct, with space at a premium. Gold circles wouldn't stack easily and would waste space. Gold squares wouldn't be easy to carry, as they'd be too squat to handle comfortably. So we're left with the bar, a relatively easy to handle shape that has the added advantage of stacking compactly. Gold is substance so dense that carrying even relatively small bricks becomes a logistical problem ( a typical gold brick is 260 mm x 60 mm x 40 mm and weighs a whopping 27 pounds). The bricks are usually moved by hand as they can't be stored on flats to be moved by forklifts as the weight of the bricks would crush the flats. Even when it's moved in an armored car the bricks can be stacked only one deep to prevent breaking the truck's axles. It's for this reason that gold is rarely moved. When the ownership is changed it's most common for the bars themselves to be re-labeled.

Cool word: lackadaisical (lack-uh-DAZE-ih-kal) - lacking spirit or energy; languid. "The staff brought over after the merger seemed a lackadaisical bunch, interested only in scarfing donuts and gossiping."

The countdown to vacation has begun, but I’m not sure who’s counting loudest, the teachers or the kids.

This is going to be a wild week. We’ll have class project displays that are open to the parents, assemblies and class parties. By the time we send the kids home on Thursday they’ll be as high as kites.

The teachers will just be pooped!

I spent most of my day trying to ties up loose ends. I have two kids to finish testing, (and I’d like to do it before vacation), but I only found time to finish up one of them. I hope I can get to the other kiddo on Wednesday. Tomorrow is a wash as I have to go to yet another computer training workshop all day. This is to learn a program that the system has paid huge money for but that no one is using.

Mainly because it’s hard to manage and they hate it. So I’ll end up getting stuck with the job. But I demand pay. I have no more blood to give.

I wish I’d been able to make more progress than I did, but at least I made a bit of a dent.

Of course the report won’t get written until sometime over vacation. I’m sure the Pink of Perfection will be appalled that I don’t have it done yet. Oh well.

It takes too damn long to write and I don’t have the time during all this Christmas rush stuff.

I have my priorities and at this time of year report writing is pretty far down the list.

I remembered to call Ashley’s family to ask if I could take her out for our ice cream social on Wednesday. I know I’ve written about Ashley before, but I don’t know which entry.

In any case, Ashley is currently in the eighth grade and is the kid who stole my heart when she was in the fifth grade. I love her to pieces and her mother has made a real effort to make sure Ashley can stay in touch with me. Ashley has a really hard tome with transitions and new situations, and her mother recognizes that. I have been a stabilizing force in her life and I like that.

Ashley gave me a really hard time transitioning to fifth grade, but once she felt safe she was a treat. I loved her and she loved me.

Doesn’t happen often with the kids I work with, at least not to this extent.

I’m looking forward to seeing her on Wednesday.

I finally got my Christmas shopping finished – if I don’t count the stocking stuffers that I need to get for my mother. I hope to get that done either tomorrow or Wednesday. But at least I’ve got all the real gifts finished.

i also bought myslef three new Christmas cds and a real copy of the movie "White Christmas". I didn't need any of them, but I wanted them.

i love "White Christmas" and the one I copied off the television stinks.

But tonight it's the all time greatest Christmas special, "Mr Magoos's Christmas Carol". I love this one more than any other and I have to watch it tonight, or I'll never be in the true Christmas spirit. I recite the dialoge and sing all the songs.

It'll be great.

Of course there’s still that wrapping issue.
