This series developed from a trip to Ireland to study a pre-historic culture
in which nature and the feminine were honored and spirit was considered
to be at the core of existence. Many of the ancient icons, however, were
no longer visable; more recent cultures had erected their icons on top of
earlier ones. And for each geographic location, there was not one, but
several stories incorporating the old myths and legends.
These photographs mean to convey my experience of that Ireland, the magic of
a world in which the unseen is as important as the visible, where the lines
between reality and fantasy are fluid, and where earth and sky seem to
undulate into one another.
The soft, surrealistic qualities of infrared film suggest the mystery of
other worlds. Multiple images have been used to unite surface perceptions
with my inner experience. Toners, bleach and oil paints have been applied
in various ways to enhance the expressive qualities of the photographs.
