Brent Johnson/Reed Low Interview
Here is Part 4 of the interview;
MT: How about this one, this one's a little more difficult. What was the first season for the St. Louis Blues? I'll give you 3 choices......
RL: I know this.
MT: The first season for the St. Louis Blues, a team that you have played for, and hey hey, don't drop any hints for him you don't wanna help him out here.....is it 59-60, 61-62 or 67-68? First year of the St. Louis Blues, there was hockey in St. Louis prior to that.
BJ: Uhhhh, I'm gonna have to go with...let's see...
MT: 59-60, 61-62, or 67-68.
BJ: 67-68.
MT: Oh wow, 3 for 3, fantastic trivia for Brent Johnson, you're having a stellar round, and you should get this one considering......you're a fan of Led Zeppelin?
BJ: Yes.
MT: Just got Jimmy Page to autograph one of your goaltender sticks when he was in town.
BJ: Yes.
MT: So giving part of the answer away, name the 4 members of Led Zeppelin.
BJ: uh, John Bonham, Jimmy Page, Robert Plant, and John Paul Jones.
MT: He is 4 for 4 and I don't anticipate him going 5 for 5.......final trivia question for Brent Johnson, what team won the first Calder Cup?
BJ: What team won the first Calder Cup......
MT: Just the city, how's that.....
BJ: I have no idea, ummm
MT: I'll drop you a hint, the city is currently in the American hockey League.
RL: I got a guess.
BJ: Idon't know, Rochester?
MT: Rochester is wrong, Reed?
RL: Hershey?
MT: Hershey, no, the answer is Syracuse.....alright thats not bad, 4 out of 5, a few soft tosses in there and one tough one to finish it off, alright we now move on to the Reed Low portion of the trivia, you by the way Brent have taken first place right now in the IceCats trivia, there will be an award at the end of the season, and we may have a trivia-off, someone who's maybe 4 for 5, if that happens to be the best...Reed Low, what year was Moose Jaw incorporated? You are from Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, what year was the town of Moose Jaw, or city of Moose Jaw, incorporated?
BJ:
(laughs)
MT: It's on the seal of the town.
RL: I'm gonna say..........1901.
MT: Oh, you were very close, 1888.
RL: I knew he was gonna pull something like that.
BJ: 13 years, I guess thats pretty close, I don't know.
MT: I wanted the story behind why Moose Jaw is called Moose Jaw but I guess there's alot of lure around it and a bunch of different answers so I thought that would be too confusing.......I looked this one up myself, and you and Brent Johnson are pretty good buddies.....
RL: Yup.
MT: And I was cruising around and found, officially from the St. Louis Blues, this was a question asked by the St. Louis Blues to Brent Johnson, and so this is the answer I'm looking for, what is Brent Johnson's favorite cereal?
RL: Ummmmm.....I'd have to say......Cocoa Puffs, I have no idea.
MT: No, the answer that was given to the hand-out that the St. Louis Blues had was Cinnamon Toast Crunch.
RL: Oh yea, thats pretty good too........that's brutal.
BJ: That is, that's a tough question, you should give him another one for that.
RL: That's two toughies right off the bat......you're throwing a-balls in for Johnny, throwing me the duece.
MT: Alright you should get this one, matter of fact if you were listening last week to the fine show, which i'm sure you were just snuggling up on the couch, who was the New York Islanders 5th choice, 80th overall in the 1980 Entry Draft?
RL: (laughs) Give me a hint, like, what kind of question's that?
MT: What year were you born?
RL: '76
MT: OK, well........who was the Islanders, 5th choice 80th overall in the 1980 Draft.
RL: Did he ever play for the Islanders?
MT: Oh sure he did, he won some Stanley Cups.
RL: Did he?
MT: Oh yea.......hey hey Brent, please, he's giving him the answer eyes........there's no cheating in this game.
RL: I'd have to say........I don't know.
MT: No, come on, it was 1980.
RL: I'm gonna have to go with uh...........Greg Gilbert.
MT: That's very good.....Brent Johnson gets an extra point off that.....Greg Gilbert, he's the head coach of the Worcester IceCats, that was a last week question, neither of those guys got that one by the way.
BJ: Wow.
RL: Damn start.
MT: What is the thickness of a hockey puck?
RL: I'd have to say.......2 inches.
BJ: No way, an inch.
MT: Come on, 2 inches? I'll give you one more guess.
RL: One inch.
MT: One inch is very good. Alright we'll give you that, you're 2 for 4.
BJ: That'd be a big damn puck.....I'd like that to be used.
MT: Maine is the Pine Tree State, Michigan is the Great Lake State or something like that?
BJ: Yup, Great Lake State.
MT: Uh, Pennsylvania is the Keystone State, you've been in Massachusetts a couple years now.....what is the nickname of Massachusetts?
RL: The...........I don't know, let's see, let's see, let's see, the.......tree state, I have no idea, there's alot of trees in here thats about as good as I got.
MT: Well it's kind of hard cuz we're far away from the ocean, if thats a hint for you.
RL: Oh, the Bay State.
BJ: There you go.
MT: Since we're in central Massachusetts.
BJ: He thought you said Missouri....oh....the Show Me State...oh.
MT: Yea, well, with a little help Reed you went 3 for 5.
RL: Whoa, thats not bad.
BJ: With Brent Johnson's help.
MT: Brent goes 4 for 5.
MT: Go ahead Reed, what do you have for trivia?
RL: I got a question, it's about the NHL.....who scored the very first goal ever for the Edmonton Oilers?
MT: Oh....You know this answer for sure?
RL: I know this, it's a guarunteed answer and I'll tell you who got the assists.
MT: You would hand over the keys to your automobile?
RL: I would hand over the keys to my automobile.
MT: Uh....let's see, probably, well I don't know...Simenko...uh...
RL: No, it was Kevin Lowe.
MT: Kevin Lowe, no relation?
BJ: Who got the assists?
RL: Don't quote me on the assists but I think it was Simenko & Gretzky.
MT: Oh, so I was getting close when I guessed Simenko.......yea......well I'm 0-1 on the trivia and if any other IceCats wanna bring some trivia along....
RL: That's my back pocket trivis cuz not alot of people know that, so I can stump em all.
MT: Well you gotta be prepared for some trivia, again boys we got some games coming up this weekend, Friday night against Quebec, we already had a caller mention some ex-IceCats already showing up on the ice, and you guys have already matched up with your games so far this season with some former IceCats, and the Philadelphia Phantoms who I don't think are to familiar to most who will come, as I mentioned before, a pretty agressive team, the Citadelles right now in 7 games they're 3-2-2, they've narrowly out-scored their opponent 35 to 30, meanwhile, looking down at the Philadelphia Phantoms, in 11 games, 4-6-1, the Phantoms coming in on a 1 game winning streak. A little about your opponents coming up.
RL: I don't know much about the Citadelles, I guess they were Fredericton's team last year so they'll have some good players, I don't know if Genron's there or not, if they don't have him they might be weak on the tending part of things but Philly, they're always a tough team, they take pride in their toughness so it should be some good games, some ex-IceCats out here, so come on out.
MT: Is that the way it is right now, early on in the season, just kind of, bring them on.......
BJ: Coach always has quick meetings before the games cuz he can't do much scouting cuz he doesn't know much about the teams this early on, but once we get a couple behind our belt we'll know more about the teams.
MT: Again, these teams, are not necessarily as crucial as last weekend, in that, those games were division games but you gotta get on the path and you gotta get in a grove and start picking up some W's, thats obvious and in your face. And a team like Quebec seems like a good oppurtunity, simply looking at their team & their record.
RL: Yea I think that one thing that we gotta get going on this year is that we don't have any problem getting fired up against these teams that are good and that kind of thing, but when another team thats not suppossed to be so good then maybe, we think well, we're young and they're young so we'll cakewalk this one but we gotta start worrying about getting the little things done, doing the little things right, getting the puck in, getting shots on net, and those are the things that are tgonna win our club hockey games and if we have enough skill that we can do it, we just gotta do it on a regular basis.
MT: I haven't even brought this up, but last week you guys were playing the Hartford WolfPack, a 5 on 3 situation for the WolfPack and the IceCats killed it off and the fans went bonkers, they went as crazy as they would for a goal or a great fight, the kill of the 5 on 3 and the applause, thats gotta tell you that there are some educated hockey fans in the barn.
BJ: Yea there are, you know, Worcester, they've been around hockey for a long time, being around Boston and what not. So you know people know about the game and know how important it is to kill off a penalty. Things like that lift us and get us going and help us score goals.
MT: That fire you up Brent?
BJ: Definetly, definetly, after we kill a big power play like that and the crowd roars, we need to get a big big crowd in there and fill up the seats and then it'll be kicking.
MT: Is that a huge influence? When you show up to your rink, cuz you want to own your building, but the amount of people in the building?
BJ: Well, the fans we get right now are great fans and they've always stuck by us but we just gotta get alot of people to come out for the game and cheer us on.
MT: The fans will have that oppurtunity this Friday night, against the Quebec Citadelles, it's tomorrow night at 7:35, and the Philadelphia Phantoms on Saturday. I wanna thank you Brent Johnson and Reed Low for being along. Guys, thanks.
BJ: Thank you.
RL: Thanks for having us.
MT: This has been "This Week with the Worcester IceCats".
