The first version of "milk" were a trio from Liverpool, called Hitting Jeremy. This was made up of Neil Heuston (mainly drums), Nick Duckett (mainly lead vocals & guitar), and Smeg (mainly bass & backing vocals). I've said mainly because they always swapped instruments and lead vocal parts. At the time Duckett was also in a band called Loose, who were; Nick Duckett (lead vocals), Hendy (bass & vocals), Peter King (drums & some vocals), and Alan Jones (guitar). Duckett's lack of enthusiasm with Hitting Jeremy became evident and the relationship between Neil and Nick was not "good".
Neil and Smeg continued, with Neil reclaiming his role as a guitarist. But the lack of a drummer signalled the decline of the band. Loose also split up for various reasons.
Duckett, Hendy and Smeg became involved with each other to support local band Navy Red for a charity gig. Still drummerless Duckett took up the sticks, with Hendy and Smeg swapping guitar, bass and vocal duties. Evidently Duckett was no longer singing, and new drummer Maz took over. This gave rise to Duckett on lead vocals for most songs, Smeg playing guitar and doing other vocals, Hendy playing bass and Maz doing the main part of the drumming (although Duckett did still drum occasionally). This band actually had 2 names, which is evident from the 2 batches of tickets that went on sale, Duckett's Not Here(which Nick hated), and Astro Zombies (which was a bit silly).
Then came ...milk the full line up, after a brief spell with Duckett(drums), Smeg(guitar), Hendy(vocals), Walshy (bass, from BO-J, and session playing) and Donny Joyle(guitar). Walshy and Donny left, and in came Sam Walkerdine on drums, after hailing originally from Hackney, London, he relocated to Formby, Liverpool and completed the full line up which continues to this day.
Sam had also been involved in a band called Innersence. This meant that, as Sam could play guitar, milk were able to swap instruments as each of the members had been so prone to doing in the past. This was the first of the bands to do a prodominantly original set. There became a sort of democracy where whoever wrote the song did lead vocals. This basically meant that Duckett did most of the lead vocals, with Smeg on guitar and vocals, Hendy on bass and backing vocals, and Sam on drums. This was not strict as Duckett sometimes played guitar aswell and would swap his guitar with Sam to play drums, with Smeg & Hendy swapping guitars, basses and lead vocals.
Duckett's influences are basically alternative american punk/rock - Pixies, Ben Folds Five, Nirvana, and the Smashing Pumpkins.
Hendy likes lots of things, but tends to edge a bit more towards the acoustic side.
Sam likes allsorts, but alot of The Beatles, Oasis & other indy stuff, but does like stuff with a harder edge than this. Sam has a band called "ETHEL".
Smeg likes to get involved with virtually every sort of music, but usually adds the heavier element of milk's "sound" if it has one!. He vaguely played in Anopsia with Adrian Feria and John Reid doing Metallica and Danzig songs. He has even occasionally played with Adrian in his dad's Spanish group " Enrique Y Los Muchachos ". Smeg has been doing session work playing bass with Hugh Clarke, playing dancey-pop in Garden Beach, Sam may also be playing drums on some of the tracks.
