Chapter 6

With one final look at my reflection, I grabbed my car keys and gave Cate a sympathetic look.

"Well, I do have a lot of work to be doing.." she eyed me.

"Cate, why don't you just come with me? We can procrastinate together. I still have my Western Civ final to study for but have I even cracked a book!"

"Selena that's on Monday isn't it?"

"Uh-huh. Come on I have tonight and all day tomorrow. Besides, don't remind me."

Cait shrugged and handed me my jacket.

The cold December air nipped at my cheeks when we stepped out of our on campus apartment. The weather certainly didn't match my mood I thought as I eyed the stormy looking sky.

"Did you hear anything about a snowstorm Selena?" asked Cate is if reading my mind.

I took one last look at the sky "no, I haven't heard anything. Nothing at all."

"Five six seven eight uh huh, uh huh...five six seven eight half tuuuurrrnn, back side and kick!" I could see Fatima, the Backstreet Boys' long time choreographer teaching the guys some new moves for their latest fast track single "Move with Me."

I looked through the doorway of the dance studio and watched them move. Even though none of the guys in the group were dance-oriented before the band formed, you sure couldn't tell by how clean and sharp they appeared nowdays. Yet again I was beginning to feel intimidated. "Cate, do you think that I'll be good enough? I don't want to leave this studio rejected. That'll be way too embarrassing..."

"Selena," Cate grabbed my shoulders and positioned me so that I was looking directly at her "you, my good friend have grown up as a dancer. You were just telling me last night that these guys here aren't born dancers like you are. You took ballet for years, so are an aerobics instructor...you have more dance credibility than the Backstreet Boys for heaven's sake! Selena, yes they're famous, but NO by any means are they BETTER than you. Now I'm sick of hearing you bitch. I put up with it last night. It's gonna end right here! You're an awesome dancer!"

"Well said, well said," spoke up a voice. From the throaty words spoken I could tell right away that it was AJ.

"You oughta listen to this woman Selena!" said AJ as he downed a half a liter of water.

"I'm lucky to have her as a best friend and a roommate" I said sincerely.

From the dance studio I could hear someone calling AJ. "Come on ladies...we have an audition to do," AJ opened the door and guided us in."

I found myself facing a beautiful African-American woman who didn't have an ounce of fat on her muscular form.

"Hello girls!" said Fatima. She looked from me to Cate and then back to me again. Probably trying to figure out who Selena was.

AJ did the honors "Fatima meet Selena and her friend Cate. I don't think we should have any trouble, just follow the new moves, we're about to work on a new routine anyhow..."

Fatima looked slyly at AJ "as our comrad here was saying, all you have to do is follow the routine. And if these blockheads can do I think anyone can do it. Especially with so much experience under your belt Selena. I'm sure it'll all be fine." She winked at me.

After changing I was told to take position between Kevin and Nick. After exchanging all the hellos we got down to business with the routines. The routine was very basic steps that had been played around with. Before I knew it Fatima wanted us to take the entire thing from the top. Since I had only learned the last half of the routine, I had to sit back and observe a bit. The third time around I pretty much had it down pat.

"ok guys, I think we can call it a day," said Fatima. I won't be seeing you guys until we meet up again in Orlando next week.

After saying her farewells Fatima approached me "you're a great dancer Selana! I look forward to working with you next week!" she gave me a hug and was off.

Cate ran over to me "what did she say?"

She said she'll see me next week Cate! I'm going to be in a music video!"
