A hook is a deceptive punch, especially when preceded by feints. Unlike a straight punch that comes straight, a hook comes from the side, outside the range of vision and scores by sneaking around the opponents's guard. It is a powerful blow, but oftentimes the practitioners get carried away and turn it into a swing.(Little 1997 vol.3)
Against a clever defensive fighter, the lead hook is sometimes the only way you can penetrate his difense or force him to vary is to that you can find openings for other type of punches.(Lee 1993)
