Dorkwinter: A Story of Jason Hensley
(the Jason Hensley biography)

by Dunston McCrew

Growing up in the mountains of the Ozarks, Jason learned early the values of self-reliance and good sportsmanship. Jason Hensley: "Yeah, when I was in the mountains, I used to hang out with bears and stuff."

These early mountain years were responsible for Jason's good natured, back-woodsy style of charm, but don't get Jason started on the television show that most of us have come to believe tells the true story of the Mountain Man. Hensley: "Gentle Ben? That show was a gyp! Real life is nothing like that."

As Jason progressed into his teen years, he moved away from the mountains and into the city, where he could often be found eating dinner or watching TV. Don't think that Jason had a hard time adjusting to life in the fast lane, after spending his formative years in the mountains, though; that just isn't the case. Jason: "The Mountains and the City are exactly the same; there is absolutely no difference between the two, whatsoever."

Fitting right in to his new home, it's no surprise he made many new friends. Among them was big time record industry executive Bob Fleen. Bob Fleen: "I remember the first time I met young Jason, with his freshly scrubbed cheeks, and wide, bright eyes. I just wanted to reach out and squeeze his tight little ass ...not that I'm gay, or anything!"

It was soon after this meeting that Roy Ball, Chad Cadmium, and Joshua Raymond had expressed to Fleen their interest in forming a band. Fleen immediately suggested they look up Jason, knowing he would be perfect for the group. Of course, he was right, and musical history was born.
