In the Celtic Calendar, Beltane (also Beltuinn, Beltaine, May Day, and Lady Day,) celebrated on May first, marks the cross quarter and the beginning of summer.
Common traditions range from the Maypole (a phallic fertility symbol, representing the fertility of the Mother, manifest in the Earth,) jumping over balefires, decorating Maybaskets, going on picnics among... other things (this is a G-rated site!! *grin*) However, being serious now, Beltane is considered a very sexy time of year, auspiscious for lovers. Hense the picnicing in the woods. Ahem.
Fae magic rules the night as well. Beltane is a Sabbat second only to Samhain when it comes to the spirit world. Be careful on Beltane night that you are well protected, and that you do not make long travels on this night.
