Linux/Freedom
What Is Linux?
Q. What is Linux?
A.
- Linux is a freely distributed operating system which
rivals or surpasses the most popular operating systems.
- Linux frees you from blue screen crashes.
- Linux manages memory better than most competing operating
systems
- Prices start at $0.00 for Linux without support nor
guarantee. (You can download it from internet sources for free. Of
course there are usually separate charges from an internet service
provider, (ISP), for your internet access.) You can buy Linux from
various retail sources with tech support at extra cost. Buying Linux with support and printed documentation,
which will usually cost between $29.99 and $79.99, is recommended for
those new to Linux.
Linux at $0.00 comes with many extras-hundreds of
applications, on line manual, electronic manual built in. But the term
"free" as applied to Linux and other GNU licensed software is not about
cost, it is about freedom to obtain, use, copy, modify, and distribute.
Of coure the part about being able to get Linux for free doesn't hurt.
See the GNU website for the official
terms.
- With Linux you could always be using the newest version
because the price
of Linux is so reasonable.
- You can change, improve, or customize Linux, and
applications that are covered by the GNU license,(see www.gnu.org for information of what is
allowed - terms and conditions). Not all, but many, applications
written for Linux are covered by the GNU license. What's GNU? www.gnu.org
